Q: Does PCOS cause hair loss from the scalp ? obestity ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 11th, 2007
Does PCOS cause hair loss from the scalp? I know it causes excess body hair. Also, is there a medication that controls the excess fat on my stomach? My Dr. says that it's caused by my PCOS. I eat healthy and am fairly active but can't get rid of the fat. I'm fat no where else on my body.

PCOS can cause excessive body hair (virilisation) but only on those body areas where males have hair (the chest, face, and back…). Virilisation is due to excessive production of male hormones in the female body. On the other hand, an excessive amount of male hormones in women can cause hair loss (alopecia) which is similar to that experienced by many males (alopecia androgenetica). Such alpecia in females is called “male patern” alopecia.
Obesity is another symptom that can be present during PCOS. Irregular menstrual cycles, in your case, are probably due to PCOS, too.

Therapy and treatment alternatives for PCOS depends upon the intended outcome. Oral contraceptives are used to establish regular cycles and to stop virilisation and obesity. Ovulation stimulators (clomiphene, GnRH-analogs, FSH and LH) and metformin are used to provoke ovulation in order to treat sterility. You can follow up with your gynecologist for more information, diagnosis and treatment options.
