Q: Really Irregular Period after dieting...nervous

I've been on birth control for almost two years now (I'm on Apri). I've always set it up where I start my period on a Monday, but it'd always start on Tuesday or Wednesday (which wasn't a big deal). Also, my period would last 4-5 days. I'm always good about taking it everyday and always take it at the same time (although every few months there's one slip up and I take it a few hours after I was supposed to).

This month it came the Tuesday BEFORE it should have started and it's lasted 7 days (as of today).

I have been sexually active, but I always use condoms in addition to the pill. I'm overweight and have been on a very strict diet for the past month and a half. Like only eating less than 500 calories and in the past couple months I've lost a little over 20lbs. I've heard of girls not getting their period when they've limited their food intake, but never of it being early and longer than usual.

I've been trying to think of possible causes: the diet, stress (I'm a college senior), work, etc. but it just seems so weird that it'd happen NOW.

Any ideas of what could be going on. I'm getting nervous and am going to see a doctor next week (that's the earliest they could get me in), but I'm really hoping to get some possible answers.

Thanks!

Well it could definitely be from the diet, and lack of proper nutrition.

The average woman needs about 1200 calories just to get out of bed and be awake all day. If you eat 1200 calories and are completely sedentary, you will maintain weight.

If you eat any less than 1200 calories and are active at all (meaning you walk from the bedroom to the living room) you are burning more than you are eating.

Please please please talk to a doctor about your diet. That is not healthy at all. You may be losing weight, but at what cost? Your health is not improving, your body is starving and eating itself. An irregular period is just the first sign of the damage you are doing.

A healthy weight loss plan includes eating at least 1200 calories and doing a regular exercise program.

Of course, the diet compounded with the stress and such will only make it worse.
