Q: Std Associated With Dermatitis.

I am wondering if there are any cases or knowledge of an std causing dermatitis. I know that gonorrhea has dermatitis as a symptom but the logistics don’t match. I realize that a lot of people have some form of dermatitis and it is most likely not related to an std but I have always suspected a cause of mine. Here is a quick background:

when I was 17 years old I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend. After a while into our relationship she told me her x had something. Some sort of rash that showed up on his arms and would come and go over time. Umm… that was something I did not want to hear! Anyway my time details are a little sketchy but about 6months to 9months later I had developed an odd rash on the inside of my left arm where the elbow is. This rash would get bright red and shiny and covered an area about 1 inch square. Soon the rash showed up on my right arm in the same spot making this annoyance symmetrical. After getting completely over seeing this I went to a dermatologist and they hooked me up with some kind of hormone cream that helped but it kept coming back no matter what. Soon this redness showed up on my face. My chin, inner cheeks, and between the eyes were always bright red. After a while this rash covered my abdominal area and man it sucked. So now I have a red face, red inner arms and red stomach. For a while the skin connecting the nostrils in my nose would actually split. It would get red and painful then the skin at the tip of the nose would just open like someone cut my nose to make the nostril bigger. This would heal with the creams but would always come back. A couple more visits to a dermatologist and a few more super cortisone creams later I finally had some blood tests done to see if I had any of the common stds. I was tested for hiv, syphilis and some other stds they check for as a standard. All tests came back negative but that was a few years ago.
I am now 33 years old and still plagued with this crap and I can’t seem to accept the fact that something like this just pops up with no cause. The fact that this type of dermatitis does not seem to run in my family on either side and my sex partner told me her x had something has lead me to believe I caught something and don’t know what.
If and std could trigger or cause something like this would it be too late to treat now that so much time has past?

Well if you had an std and did not treat it then you would still have it. So if you got this rash as a side effect of gonorhea (sp) or chlamydia (if this is even possible) then you would have tested positive for one of these stds. Or if it was from one of the other stds then you would have tested positive for that as well. Stds don't just go away. Some can be treated and eliminated, some can just be treated and some lay dormant, but do not go away.
But anyway, if you would have gotten an std from that girl you mentioned, you most likely would have had some kind of symptom. Or if it was an std that you would not get symptoms of, your next sexual partner would have gotten from you and developed symptoms. Bottom line I seriously doubt that your rash is from an std. It is possible, but you would still have that std unless you have taken an antibiotic that would have killed chlamydia or the like.

My thought pattern is pretty similar unfortunately. I only dwell on this because of the sequence / timeframe in which the rash showed up and the fact that I seem to be the only one I know in my family that has it. I am reaching pretty hard for an explanation and possible treatment that goes beyond applying a cortisone cream 3 times a day forever. Do you know of a broader spectrum test that may include some less known bacteria transmitted sexually? I swear I felt like an fool last time I had blood test done at a local walk in general clinic when they asked me what I wanted to get tested for. I had no idea and chose the big names I had heard of. If there are some bacteria strains not checked for by these standard std tests I would like to know what tests can be done to actually detect them.

The only ones I can think of are chlamydia and gonorhea(sp?) herpes, hpv, trick (nickname, don't know the full name) and that is all I can think of. I dont know about guys, but to test girls for the first two they take a "sample" from down there. I don't think blood tests show those. Your best bet would be to maybe call a clinic and get tested for all stds. They will be able to tell you more about how testing is done as I am not sure. Sorry I could not help you more.
