Hello all, A few days ago I yawned really big and my left side of my lower jaw felt like it dislocated from my upper jaw and iv been dizzy and its been swollen. I went to the ER because I kept messing with my jaw which made it worse until I felt like i was gonna pass out. The doctor told me its TMJ and I should take motrin and use heat pads till it fixed itself. Iv been taking the motrin and I do feel much better even though I still feel as if my jaw isnt lined up right. They took xrays and a catscan and everythings fine but its still annoying. But my question is, will smoking irritate the tmj? Im not talking about smoking a pack a day here, just 1 or 2 a day. Im just worried about lighting up and then my jaw swelling up again and me going crazy like I did the other day about it. thanks

I'm a smoker as well and after I exhale my left jaw clicks a bit. I doubt it'll irritate your tmj because smoking doesn't use much muscle or exaggerated movements of the jaw. You should ask your doctor.

smoking is not good for you period. id suggest that you quit. it will effect your jaw--you use the same muscles and action for sucking through a straw--beleive me that hurts.
