I'm not going to make a call re whether there is any "gayness" involved here. But I will say that there is never anything wrong with masturbation or "beating off" as you put it. I masturbate often myself, so I can't ever criticize that.
Regarding whether beating off in a group is unusual or "deviant" or gay or likewise, I believe depends on what you are thinking about during your getting aroused and when you are deep into your state of arousal (read this as having a full erection, jacking off intensely and working towards a major cum shot). If you thoughts include the opposite sex either paired with you or in a threesome or whatever, then you probably have nothing to worry about, but if you are thinking solely of how the guy next to you looks while he's jerking and if you are admiring his penis, etc., you may need to think about your reason for participating in a group jack off session.

Define ok, because this would be a subjective answer that would vary by the person and the society or community in which one lives in.

It is an "unusual behavior" only in that one can assume that the ratio of people masturbating alone vs then with their friends is rather high. But this is a common occurrence nonetheless, many guys do masturbate together.
