Loss of Libido 2 Years After Taking Risperdal

Must Read
Schizophrenia is a lifelong brain disorder. But how do doctors define it? And is there a cure?...
What causes schizophrenia? And what are the risks of developing this treatable mental illness?...
The first signs of schizophrenia may be difficult to identify. Learn the most common signs and symptoms of schizophrenia and know when to ask for medical help....
I don't have schitzophrenia but i have a chronic pain condition that was misdiagnosed as purely mental...I took risperdal at about 2-6mg with a max dose of lexapro then zoloft and i lost my sex drive the first day i took it...I was in so much pain at the time i continued taking it for about 2 months...Then i didn't like the risperdal b/c i noticed i started to lactate and the ssris found out later have a synnergic effect on it...And finally i took more ssris for another 8 months till i found out where the pain was from...I blame risperdal b/c i had a good sex drive on ssris until that was added to the mix......So now my question is has anyone ever gotten their sex drives back to baseline after taking a mid to high dose of risperdal>? even if it took them months to years to get it back do they eventually come back or is there as drug needed to reverse this effect? I know for a fact it induced some type of secondary hypogonadism in me and i am definitely not the only one as i know a few others this happened to...BTW it has been 2 years since i took that garbage drug that damaged my libido and soul... Crying or Very sad

This is the same problem my boyfriend and I are experiencing. Since taking Risperdol for the last 7 months his sex drive has been a big zero. He has changed recently to Ziprex but not much difference in his libido. He is just not interested. I wonder if this is the medicines or the illness itself. He had a scizophrenoformic episode 7 months ago.

Let me know how you are doing. Good luck Smile

Hi, I have been on risperdol and I can't remember if it specifically affected my sex drive, but I do remember there was a time when it was low. I had trouble lactating also. I still do and I have been off of that drug for more then 3 years. And yes my sex drive is back.

So hopefully you can get yours back too.

This is in response to the initial post that I wrote over 2 years ago. I was not thinking properly when I wrote that post. Innocent people may have been hurt and confused because of my statements.

I have recently began to grow as a human being. In order to heal from psychological injuries one should put their faith in a higher power. One should pray and meditate and change their focus away from themselves in order for healing to begin. An important ingredient is that you must have courage that you will get better. Do not let the constant negativity (which may be reinforced by the internet and other discouraging sources that you refer to) override your path to positivity and remember the one who is most critical and most negative about yourself is yourself. Hopefully these words will set a new course in the road to your full recovery. Good luck!

Parents , say no to risperdal
I was on risperdal from 18-31 yrs old. I switched to seroquel after that. My sex drive and ability was at zero the entire time on risperdal and has never come back, even 1 year later. Risperdal, as well as all a-typical anti-psychotic medicines, block dopamine receptors. Dopamine is the brain chemical responsible for excitement, feelings of love, sex drive, and thoughts. I am no doctor, but from my experience risperdal is and should ONLY be a last resort medication for anybody. I am now married and my sex life is FAR from ordinary by any means. Without viagra I am completely limp and orgasm within 10 seconds. With viagra I get big head aches and I feel out of body. I am very resentful of the doctors who put me on this medicine when I was a teenager as well as the United States protocol for administering this medicine to teen crisis centers for 5150 situations . I feel the side effects completely out way the benefits . Risperdal haunts me every day and has taken away my manhood so to speak. Fortunately my wife and I travel and spend our time outdoors hiking and camping . If anyone would like more info or would like to contact me please call me at : 518-557-1241 Adam

Hello, I'm French, I'm 23 and the answers to this discussion makes me feel really worried. I have been taking Risperdal for 2 years because I had a psychosis.
I used to love sex, but since I've taken Risperdal I have ZERO libido. In fact, I'm not at all interested in sex. At the beginning, it was probably because of my psychosis, but as I feel much better, it should be because of the medication.
I am really worried because some people here say they have stopped Risperdal and their libido never came back. Can it be possible?

Thanks for answering.

Can Risperidone causes permanent sexual dysfunction??
Risperdal was added to my anti depressant medications to help treat my depression and i became sexual dysfunctional with the inability to love or get excitement when i see a very attractive person. I have stop taking the risperdal but my condition didn't changed. I also stop taking the SSRI hoping that i will get back my libido but since fully stopping all medications i am still unable to regain my sexual health, it's been several months since. I am worry that this condition could be permanent. I wish my doctor hadn't given me this drug. I am very worry about my sex life. Does anyone had this condition that was reversed? what did u do?

This is a supplement to my last year post. Risperdal does effect sex function no doubt about it. On a more positive perspective there are many very amazing traits to risperdal. Keeping hold of sexual energy without feeling overwhelmed, angry, unsatisfied, or depressed is quite an ability. Looking back on my twenties when I took risperdal, I was able to acomplish many amazing things. Risperdal allowed me a deep sleep every night, a ZEN space during the day to keep me focused, healthy and a very calm and quiet personality. Sex is great but there are so many better things to do and see in the world. Do not be unhappy , look on the bright side and if you must be on risperdal, use it as your ally and trust that you are where you are for a good and divine reason.

I have been off risperdal for 2.5 years . The answer is complicated and the easiest answer is yes, my sexual ability is improving. Wellbutrin helped unlock the door to excitement. Communication and openness with my wife helps, along with good diet and exercise. I currently take 125 mg seroquel and 30 mg remeron , both at night. Everybody is different , you have to find what works for you. You know better than your doctor how the medicine makes you feel. Remember, you have real world experience of the drug not text book descriptions.
