My granddaughter's father is on disability for schizophrenia. He has now managed to get an order for temporary custody of the baby who is 16 months old. He is saying he is afraid for the baby - that he thinks my daughter is going to kill herself and the baby. Totally off the wall.

He has been in the ER numerous times the last few months. In inpatient care for several weeks. He has headaches and hears voices. He receives disability but has someone who receives his checks and handles his bills and money (this is a disability stipulation).

My questions is that I wonder if he is capable or safe to have custody of a baby.

He could be, I really couldn't say. But where are the parents in all this? If he is unsafe to have custody, it would have been pretty easy for the parents to argue that, given that he is not a birth parent of the baby and he has been in inpatient care (not that he should be discriminated against, but some people would judge based on that)

Is this your son-in-law then?

My girlfriend is the same way and im trying to get custody now. shes really unstable and abuses drugs and cannot make any decisions. i dont want my son to go through this anymore. i know its hard for you to think he is unfit but his illness is serious and if he cannot take care of his bills how can he take care of a child. you have to look at it for the child and not him. he has problems and will always have them and his child deserves a stable life.
