Hello All,
I'm looking for some information to a disorder my Gyno knows little about. I've been having very severe menstral cramps for the last 9 months that mimic labor contractions. The doctor recently did a laparoscopy on me. He found no Endometriosis which is what he though I might have. Instead, he finds out that my uterus is soft and spongy. He called it an ultra-sensitive uterus. I've done some research on my own and the only thing I found in reference to a spongy uterus was Adenomyosis. Adenomyosis usually happens in women over the age of 35, (I'm 26) who have had children. I do not have any children. I am totally at a loss with this. Am I the only freak show out there with a spongy uterus and what does this mean? I don't seem to match anything associated in gynocological disorder manuals. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. Thanks!

It sounds to me like adenomyosis and having a spongy uterus are two different things that have the same symptoms. I wouldn't view a spongy uterus as a gynecological disorder, just a characteristic.

I could be wrong though. Did he say you had anything to worry about?

Adenomyosis and Endometriosis
I am 19 and I have endometriosis and adenomyosis. Your body does not care how old you are. I was diagnosed w/endometriosis at 16 and adenomyosis just 1 week ago. The only cure for either one is a hysterectomy which my dr. wont do cause I am so young. You are not the only exception and I am truely sorry that either of us have to go through this!!

A spongy uterus is a classic indicator of adenomyosis. It might be rare to be diagnosed with it at such an early age, but it is possible to have it that young.

It is very difficult to diagnose adenomyosis, so a whole bunch of other stuff has to be eliminated first before getting any real answers from a doctor. However, with the better resolution US and MRI machines it is getting easier to detect these days.

Like the OP, I'd had a lap, but no endo was found. And I don't fit the "typical" profile either- too young and never had a full-term pregancy. Welcome to the 20% club.

I hope your doctor believes you about the pain at least. It was a real battle to get mine to believe me and I suffered with horribly debilitating pain for years before she would help. At least now I get a little relief, but still far from ideal.

Unfortunately, hysterectomy is the only permanent cure for (diffuse) adenomyosis, but will not always help with endometriosis pain.

If you want to have kids someday, there is still some hope. You might have a hard time, but it isn't impossible. That's why the doc won't give you a hysterectomy yet.

I wish you well with your treatment, and hope you have a better time than I've had so far.

Pain issue severe lower abdominal
I have read your articles and it seems i have this, i cannot believe my doctors have never reccomended any of this to me, i have been hospitalized every month for the last two years and every month is more and more severe. Last month i passed out at the steering wheel while driving with my children, thank god it was at a red light, my olderst called 911, the pain i have now is so severe i find myself so still with the pain and NOTHING helps it!!!!
When in the hospital the pain is so bad they give me dilotted every four hours and it breaks throgh. It seems like no one believes me on how bad the pain is and they never find anything wrong except some cyts on the ovary and a swollen spleen but they say not enough to cause the pain i am claiming.
It is so so so bad then after the most severe of two weeks i end up with my period then suffer about four more days, so technically i have two good weeks then two horror weeks, please anyone with help or advise any doctor or nurse or person with help a cure advice anything i am out of my mind with the pain, and it is not because i am a sensitive person because i have battled breast cancer five times 2001,2003, 2005, 2007 had two c sections and a double masectomey with a tram so no sensitive here. no pain meds work on me if anything the pain breaks throgh EVERY thing.
i write and write the hospitals begging for someone to find out what is wrong with me. PLEASE someone help!!

to confused and need help
I really think you need to see a GYNOCOLOGIST. Explain the symptoms, tell him/her that you researched the internet and ran across this disease with simptoms similiar to what your experiencing and ask for a uterine biopsy. It wont take but a minute and will feel like a cramp, so take a pain med. before you go in to get it done. This takes a week and you can get this taken care of. You dont want to keep suffering needlessly. Life is too short and you got a lot of livin' to do. Don't let your body cheat you and your children out of fun together.
