Hey everyone!!! I'm 17 yrs. old, and I have really bad back pain pretty much everyday. I've never been to the doctor about it, but sometimes it's pretty painful. Especially when I lay on my stomach for a certian amount of time, then i try to get up, it hurt terriable. This has been going on for yrs. Probably since I was about 13. Any suggestions??????? Thanks in advance.

I used to experience the same thing, one I check the mattress that I lied on it was too soft for me I had it changed (it's better to have a hard/firm surface to lie on - for me), the position that when I was lying and the other was my weight, the heavier I was the painful I felt when I lied on my stomach. Hope my experience help you, good luck.

Back Pain
Hello Aunt WeeWee,

Now that's an interesting handle. Must be a story in back of that.

I'm with Hart 95%. Especially when you mention about the pain really being bad when you lay on your stomacih. That sent a red flag immediately that perhaps your mattress is at least part of the problem.

My ole back is at a point where I can't sleep on a regular mattress as they all kill my back. For the past 9 months or so now I'm sleeping on an air mattress. They cost about $150 and if you find it doesn't work out for you you can return it at most places and get your money back. Send me a PM and I'll give you the details. If you try a regular mattress I'd recommend that you STAY AWAY from a pillowtop. Those things may feel comfortable at the store but after 2-3 years they will be like a hammock. Also stay away from a mattress that has a lot of cheap foam in it as they too don't last long.

With due respect to Hart I will disagree just a bit regarding getting a really hard/firm mattress. Those too are not for everyone. They are impossible for me to sleep on. We are all just different.

Now to the most important question? Have you been to a neurologist or spine surgeon? If not, you really need to get their opinion regarding your back and what is needed to rid you of the pain. And stay away from pain meds if that is what they recommend. Pain meds only cover up the pain and worse you may become addicted to them.

Hope this helps a bit. Do stay in touch and let us know how things go.

Take care.

Thanks for the imput guys. No I've never been to any kind of doctor about it. I'm a bad procrastinator. ( I think that's how you spell it). I plan to go soon. I'll keep everyone updated.

P.S- By the way RichT, my nickname is Weenie, and my little nephew calls me Aunt WeeWee, so it has just kind of stuck with me. I got the nickname Weenie, cause 1 night my sisters friend was drunk and called me Chrisweena, instead of Christina, so everyone started calling me Weenie!!

Hello Christina,

A suggestion if I may - First look into a new mattress and see if that solves your back problem. By the way, I haven't been able to sleep on my stomach for YEARS because of my back.

I'll send you a PM so i can speak freely about the air mattress and other mattress issues. Just sign in and then click on "private messages".

I'm SOOOooo very glad that you plan on seeing a doctor soon. GREAT!!! Another suggest if I may - talk to others that you know have seen spine specialists. Find out which ones they liked and which ones they did not. I hate to say it, but there are good docs and not so good docs out there. The last thing you want (and I want for you) is that you end up with a loser. Also call your local hospitals and find out from them who does the most back surgeries. Twist their arm and ask who they would recommend or go to themselves.

Have an ENJOYABLE Day!!!

Different Take
mattress can make all the difference in the world,, i used to love my old water bed, some love them some hate them.. suffered thru a cheap mattress for years.. got myself a temper pedic.. i love it.. some don't.. it's hard to find something that works. as far as a doctor goes.. i'd actually try a chiropractor first.. but with all doctors, good ones and bad ones.. u have to research them.. if they think they can heal the world just by their services alone,, look elsewhere.. they are good for some things, but not everything. if it's an honest person they will tell you whether you need to see a specialist or not.. good hunting..

a Simple Test ...
Hi Aunt WeeWee

If you do decide to see a Chiropractor, Osteopath, PT or whoever ... make sure you ask for a free assessment first. This way you can see what they do, costs, time for recovery and if they won't give you 10 minutes of their time --- are they going to be really there to help you or their pocket.

Also check your mattress and if old then look at replacing it. Also learn a few self help techniques to help ease your back pain. Lying on your stomach will aggravate yoru lower back if a few joints are tighter or slightly compressed. But you can ease these quickly.
