Q: Why Do Kids Bounce Back From Colds ... And Adults Don't?

I was just talking to my cousin last night, whose son is home sick with a cold or virus. No strep throat. She was noticing that if she gives him Tylenol cold or Sudafed, or a small dose of antibiotics, that he feels great and behaves normally.

Why do kids rebound so much quicker than adults from colds and flus and viruses? Any ideas?

Maybe it has to do with metabolism and the fact that we as adults tend to store more junk in our system than kids do. They have more pure bodies so it's easier for something to get in and then flushed out.

Kids can just zip around while we as adults get more and more slow as we get older. They also don't have all the stresses of life to worry about. The daily fatigue that we get from life in general slows us down, whereas kids just sleep and get better and don't worry because they just don't have to when they are little.

I don't know...just my thought on that.

I think you might be right --- they have less emotional stress (generally) ... which is THE cause of illness. Have you ever gotten sick when you're NOT stressed? A body that is not stressed will not get sick. Any other theories?

Yeah I was thinking that stress is probably the main factor....we probably get so much put on our plates that we can't handle it, so we get weak and tired because we push ourselves to work harder and harder to keep up. So that's when some little sickness edges it's way in. Since we're weak it takes a while to fight it, and then when we get over that, we have to recover from what it took from us, plus make up for the fatigue we had in the first place!!

And I think not wanting to go back to the daily grind makes us psychologically prone to another sick day.

Yeah I think also maybe since adults have more toxins built up it is harder for us to shake a cold. Plus we are probably not as able to get the necessary rest in order to fully heal ourselves.

I think this is true of surgeries and everything too. What kids are able to bounce back from is just incredible! Like this little boy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6344MGxc2s &feature=related , who is only two years old and has had a dozen surgeries! It's just incredible!
