OK, at their first appointment you doc is checking for any post-birth complications which were misssed wjhile you were in the hospital.
They will listen to her heart to see if she has a transient murmer-it's a common conditiion in newborns and most of this finish growing together on their own and are completely benign.
He will check again the positioning of her hips to be sure that she has no signs of congenital hip dysplagia.
They will do a follow up heel stick to check for inborn errors of human deleopment which can occur as baby develops. These are failry rare, and many can be treated if intervention occurs within two weeks of birth. This is just a confirmatory test, as they also do one in the hospital. Both my kids slept through this procedure.
They will offer you the Hep B vaccine if your child hasn't already received this. I declined to have this given to my children until they were older. But that's just me.
The doc will weigh baby, inquire about feedings and diapers, take measurments of head circ and weight/height. As stated previuosly, it is quite common for baby to loose some weight in the first few days-particularly breast fed babies. Typically, a child will double their birth weight in six months and triple it by one year.
Your physician may review baby's hearing tests from the hospital to determine if follow up testing is required.
A good pediatrician will ask about how you are feeling. Make a list of any questions and concerns and address these with your physician during your visit. Better to ask now than to have to call him another day with a question. He will inquire about nursing (if applicable), your sleep, your mood, and check for any signs of post-partum depression or anxiety. His concern should be for every aspect of your baby's life, and that includes your ability to care for her, so be honest with your child's care provider. He is accustomed to this issue and can offer suggestions and resources for you.
Once Kristin has her head to toe 1 week tune-up, you will be on your way. Have fun! Ask questions. I can't wait to heaar how she's doing.
