Ouch - Weight Gain Lecture.

I went to the doctors today.... most
not-fun visit yet.
First she tells me that the swab I took
last week came back positive... the one
that I can't remember the name of. Staph
B? Strep B? Whatever it is.... so I get to
get a penicillin shot when I go into
labor. Which I'm kinda worried about,
because my mom is allergic to penicillin
and my OB wouldn't give me a straight
answer on whether I could be or not. So I
guess we just have to pray that I'm not
allergic, because that'd be a pretty
crappy thing to find out while giving
birth!
Then I get a lecture on my weight because
I've gained 48 lbs overall, and 9 of those
in the last 3 weeks. She wants me to diet.
I'm sorry, but I just don't think I need
to be worried about that right now, and I
honestly don't think dieting is very
healthy for a pregnant woman! I already
eat healthy, I've cut out soooo much crap
from my diet already. I don't drink soda
anymore, and I prepare all my own food so
I know it's healthy. It's all fruits and
veggies and grains and chicken and ground
turkey. The only sugar I have anymore is
the little bit I put on my oatmeal, or
sometimes I'll melt some chocolate chips
and dip my fruit in them. So I think I'm
doing pretty dang good food-wise!
AND the part that irritated me the most...
I specifically asked her if I was going to
have problems from gaining so much, and
she said that it wouldn't effect the baby
but I might have a hard time working it
off afterward. Like I care about that

Yeah, it'd be nice if I could
automatically go back to pre-baby weight
and body.... but honestly, I'm not going
to stress about it! I think I look pretty
dang good for weighing 178 lbs, and Jacob
will love me and I'll love myself no
matter what the scale says.
Stupid doctor.
(wow I wrote a book there XD sorry girls)

I tested positive for Strep B too, but
they ran the penicillin through an IV and
not a shot. They put a new bag of it up
every 4 hours until I gave birth.
Don't worry about your weight gain. I
would certainly not diet. Dieting is
usually a no no during pregnancy. Maybe
just try and cut back if you are eating a
lot of sugary stuff or drinking a lot of
soda...I just reread your post...sounds
like you have altered the way you eat very
well. Don't worry about; your main focus
right now should be a healthy baby!!! I
gained about 45 pounds during my pregnancy
and dropped most of it very quickly after
birth. I still have about 10 pounds of
it, but I was underweight to start with
and needed the extra weight!!!

Wow, that's ridiculous! Doctors can really
make you feel like crap sometimes, huh? I
saw your most recent belly pics, you look
great!! What kind of doctor tells a
pregnant woman to diet?! Your diet sounds
better than just about anyone else I know!
Good job growing your baby!

if you plan on haveing an epideral you
cant get it until you have the antibiotics

I can't believe some of these doctors you
ladies have. Mine has never said anything
although i think she might cause i'm
creeping up on 40lbs here soon. I was over
weight to s tart so i figured they would
watch it close. I agree though, just keep
focused on your baby, and long as you're
eating healthy don't let it get to you! I
see your pics i think you look great!

Thanks girls. I'm trying not to pay
attention to it, but it still kinda
stings. I've never gone over 135 lbs,
and now to see it nearly 180 sucks
enough... I've been okay with it because
it's not all me, it's baby too... but that
stupid doctor's making me feel crappy
about it >.<

I don't think you will have any problems
with penacillin..my sister is allergic to
it but none the other 5 family members
have any problems.
As far as the weight gain. don't worry
about it! If you are ok with it then don't
let anyone get you down!

Thanks for that :]
Actually, someone brought up a good point
on another forum... going to see an
allergist? She said she didn't know if
they can find out ahead of time if I'm
allergic to penicillin, and even if they
could she doesn't know if they'll do a
test on me because I'm pregnant.... does
anybody have any idea if I could go and
get tested? Can the find out ahead of time
if I'm allergic?

are you kidding? your doctor had a problem
with you gaining 48lbs!!
That's crazy! My doctor didn't say a word
about my weight to me and I went from
115lbs to 205lbs...that's 90lbs,double
what you gained!
It has been a chore to work off though, but
then again,I really don't care what I
weigh as long as I am healthy and feel
good about myself.
It's been 18 months since I had my son and
I am 165lbs now.The greatest part of
giving birth with my son is that I lost
10lbs the minute I delivered him!(lol)

What do they give women who are allergic
to pennacilin if their baby has strep b?
You should tell your OB you don't want to
risk it if you are worried. Having an
allergic reaction when you are about to go
in labor would be terrible, and if there
is even a possibility of it, as long as
there are other drugs that would help
strep b I think you should be given the
option to take one of those instead.
On a side note, having a problem with
gaining 48 lbs is ridiculous. That is a
healthy, fine weight to gain!

I had strep B when pregnant with Nathan. I
am also allergic to penicillin. There are
many other antibiotics they can give you
other than penicillin. I wouldn't worry
about that. If you are worried about it, I
am sure they can give you something else.
I don't like your doctor.

FOr an allergy to be symptomatic it has to
be the second time you have it. The first
time, you will not know. Like for example,
if someone is allergic to peanuts, their
very very FIRST exposure, will not
indicate an allergy, its the SECOND
exposure. So ifyou have never had
penicillin you will not know if you are
allergic until you have a second dose.
And I am going through the same weight
thing, I was 130 to start, and I am about
178, sooo scary. But I am super short,
yuck. As long as baby is healthy, we have
our whole lives to lose the weight!!!
Take care.

i gained 60 pounds during my pregnancy
and my doc didn't say word one about it.
i asked her a few times and she said just
eat healthy and don't drink pop. lol. my
BP and blood sugar levels were good the
whole time and she said those were the
things she was watching, not my weight. i
still have 30 pounds to take off but the
weight gain had no effect on my pregnancy,
other than having a big baby but thats
just genetic for me.

talk to the nurses when you go into labor,
the nurses will be the one giving it to
you so they can talk to your doctor
i have group b strep and im allergic to
penicillin, usualy they would give you
something in the cephcil family but
wouldnt ya know im allergic to that to and
they gave me something else, they CAN work
with you, no one wants someone to die
while giving birth lol
i cant really comment on the weight gain i
only gained about 20-25 lbs over all

My 1st Dr. I had when I moved up here to
Nevada was an ass like your Dr. and gave
me a diet list too when he saw I put on a
lousey 40+ pounds. I threw the list away
of course and continued to eat how I was.
I mean I was 105 at start... so umm yeah I
needed every pound I gained. And you know
something, I look damn hot with my new
baby weight and I don't entend on losing
it! I'm 36 weeks along and now at a
beautiful weight of 152 I wouldnt change a
thing! I just got my culture strep B test
done also but I won't get the results for
a lil while. I hope my lil girl pops out
soon Goodluck with your
pregnancy.
