Q: Is It Tmj?

Hello people Smile

I wonder if you might help me.
I have a range of symptoms affecting by jaw, neck and head and have done for at least 5 years.

The onset was quite bizarre. I had a constant pins and needles sensation on my forehead. Within a few weeks bizarrely and involuntary my jaw started moving from side to side, then a few days later back and forward. All outwith my control. Then my teeth started to clench together with such immense force I was very concerned my teeth would snap. I also developed severe pressure in my temples and sinus area and constant pins and needles on the temples and forehead. I also had a horrible sensation of something moving on my palate

My right ear is constantly crackling/grating from the most miniscule of movements...when I hold my nose and blow (like you do to relieve pressure) this seems to help for a few seconds...but my point is the area whcih is inflated for that time must be related somehow...does anyone know what this area is? Is it to do with my eustachian tube?

I also have right sided neck pain around the occipital area and down my neck

To date I have seen various people and had various scans including maxillofacial who worked on the basis that I had TMJ for years...no result. Then they felt it wasnt tmj and thought it must be something else. I approached neurology which again came back with nothing. I have just had a neck and sinus CT scan to see what that reveals.

Can anyone relate to any of these symptoms? I have tried every treatment available and still no release, and, to be honest, its a living hell which is holding me back.

I have read about things such as eagle syndrome and wonder if it could be something to with a ligament perhaps?

I'll stop just now as dont want to natter on too much, but I would be grateful if someone could respond, hopefully relate and explain why these symptoms occur...pins and needles, why when my teeth meet my jaw will go to one side if it isnt tmj.. is there anything else that controls the jaw that maybe I need to check out?

I'm no specialist but it sounds like tmj to me. My jaws have always clicked slightly but mine inflamed just like your description after orthodontia. A lot of pain has been relieved after I quit wearing my retainers though unlike the clicking I used to have, my left jaw grates and doesn't open in a straight line and I have sinus issues. My issue is all these little problems aggrivating eachother leading to tmj due to an improper bite from orthodontics I doubt xrays can detect. Maybe your issue is similar to mine. Do you have an idea as to how it started?

Yeah it sounds like tmd-----you may want to see a chiropractor. the tingling is pinched nerves. if you need anything let me know --pm me at any time.

Hey Folks Smile Thanks very much for the replies

Thenumber12: There was nothing specific, although I did have a lot of stressful things going on at the time so could have started it.

Cheers Dyan...I have actually seen a chiro before, but only went for a couple of sessions....I think i'll give it a go again and see how I get on Smile

I've also noticed when i'm out in the cold weather my jaw will tighten and teeth will start to clamp shut. Is the cold weather something whcih affects tmj sufferers?

This may take a bit of to and fro, but thanks for your replies (I very much appreciate it) and hopefully I can get to the bottom of this and get some relief.

Smile

hi
Hi, i've been having a similar pins and needles feeling in my temples and forehead, eye floaters, along with headaches and swelling/stiffness in my jaw after chewing. I also have had some vision problems and some dizziness.

This sounds to me like TMJ, however i never hear the pins and needles referred to in the list of symptoms.

I've been having these symptoms for about 2 months now and it never seems to go away.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Thanks...

you never hear of pins and needles listed in the symptoms because the symptoms are numerous and varied from person to person. If i were you Id head to a chiropactor and a neuromuscular dentist. I had the same problems as you for a while and now thanks to the above i dont have them any more. its worth a try.

Hi
Hi, i'm cindy i agree with Dyan, try a chiropracter. Because i have all of those symptoms, and it is my neck technically doing it. Effecting the jaw. but it does sound like symptoms of tmj. But you know it takes all kinds of strange forms. Tmj does. i get the pins and needles. that is usually a nerve thing. i get numb finger tips, pins and needles, even in my legs. weird weird stuff. i hope you feel better! cindy
