Q: Pre-term Labor - Beginning Or End?

I'm 20w6d pregnant - Late Tuesday night, I went to the hospital - I was having intense cramping & pain because of a vaginal infection, I believe. I was brought right up to L&D, & instantly montiored for baby's heartbeat & contractions. The cramping wasn't just cramping - I was having contractions. They did a vaginal exam, as well & the test results won't be back for another day, or so.. To get to the point - the dr. taking care of me explained my uterus as "irritable," & that they needed to get the contractions under control before pre-term labor became inevitable. Forunately, they did just that - got my contractions under control & were able to release me. I'm scared that this isn't the end... anyone had any pre-term labor experience? I know nothing, besides I'm having every sign of it; increase in vaginal discharge - watery, & mucus-like - Abdominal pain, menstrual-like cramping/contractions - pressure in the pelvic area (especially in the cervix) - & lower back pain.

I'm surprised the doc didn't put you on bedrest and some sort of progesterone supplement....you should talk to the doctor more about it. Don't wait for a test to prevent, you know what you feel! so you should try to get help now.

I've been going through pre term labor since I was around 25 weeks. The contractions didn't get caught on the monitors till 30 weeks though. I kept telling my doctor that I was having too many of what I thought were BH contractions but it turns out they were real. I went in at 30 weeks and found out I was contracting every 2-4 minutes. They stopped the contractions with terbutaline. That only worked temporarily though. The next day I went back and I had dilated to 1 cm and was 50% effaced. The day before I had been closed and 0%. They stopped them again and put me on procardia to take at home. I've had to go to the hospital a few times since then to have them stopped but I'm now 34 weeks and I was checked a little less than a week ago and have not progressed any more. My advice is to stay in the bed as much as possible. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day because dehydration can cause contractions, and yes it needs to be water not just liquid. Also, anytime the contractions or pain starts I would go ahead and go to L&D. With you being so early you need to be extra careful. Your little one needs to hang in there for a lot longer.
