Q: Hypertension Medications

My aunt has hypertension and suffered a stroke about 2 years ago, prior to the stroke she was taking novasc (5mg), after the stroke they increased the dosage to 10 mg., the physician she was seeing prior to and immediately following her stroke retired, and her new doctor prescribed diovan 40 mg., in addition to the novasc.

My questions: 1. Why two hypertension medications?
2. Can there be adverse effects if you stay on one hypertension medication for too long?
3. Should medications be changed periodically, if so how often?
4. My aunt still has problems with her balalnce. Is there anything she can do about this. Prior to her stroke, she was in good health, was not diagnosed with hypertension until she was 64, she's now 70, but can't seem to shake the effects of the storke. Please help.

My blood pressure is in the lower range of high blood pressure. I started meds in december. When I went back to see the doctor in february, she added a second medication to my daily regimen. She told me that some people have to take as many as 4 different pills to get it under control. I think the different meds focus on different potential causes of hypertension. I take hctz (a diuretic) and lisinopril (an ace inhibitor). My blood pressure is now under control.

I think that doctors have a good handle on how to treat hypertension. Your aunt's doctor probably knows what he's doing.
