I am a 40 year old woman, no kids, and I had been on the depo provera shot for years...........but wanted a change, and wanted to use a birth control method whose side affect, like depo provera, was the absence of bleeding..........EVER. (Love not getting my period............duh)

So I decided on the Mirena IUD. Went in to have it inserted yesterday..............HOLY OUCH. I do have a high threshold for pain, but this was extreme. He first used a device to "open" my cervix a bit, since it was completely closed because I have not had children. That was tolerable. But then when he tried getting the Mirena up into the uterus (through the cervix, of course) I screamed in pain and flew about 2 feet backwards on the examining table. Crying or Very sad
He then decided he would try numbing my cervix...........so a long needle went up into my vagina to numb the cervix............that was tolerable. He said "now we will wait a minute" and I said "how about we wait TWO minutes?" and he did, the doctor I might add was a real trooper. After the numbing, he attempted again, with success.
Good lord after all that, I never wanted to have SEX AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But as a helpful hint to those of you considering this procedure, a word to the wise...........If you have not had children, just ask to be numbed first. It would have saved at least 20 minutes of my time and the doctors. If they need to try to "stretch out" your cervix first with the little tool, chances are you better just get numbed and get on with it.
Cramping was severe for about 3 hours, but am fine today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Time will tell as far as all the other side affects..........................

Good Thing
Good thing for people to know, at least. I knew nothing about how painful it could be going into it...........of course I have done my research AFTER the whole procedure is over...............................

I expected the worst, but my insertion(sp?) didn't hurt that much. I've had 2 kids though(natural). I just got really dizzy any time they put something through my cervix(the measuring thing and the insertion) after that I was fine.

It hurt me. Ouch. Probably the most painful thing I've ever felt. I didn't scream or jump, but I think I was shaking and pretty pale. Thank god my hubby drove me home. No kids. And I had already taken 3 aleve going into it- I didn't get any numbing shots, but I probably didn't need them- it was painful but only for about 5 seconds and then I was ok.
It was a breeze to get out though, I hardly felt it.

I had one after my second child and it was a horrible experience. It was painful during inserstion, I bled for 4 straight months and had the most horrendeous cramps of my life during that time. It became infected almost a year to the day of having it put in so I had it removed and swore I would never ever ever get another one. It was nothing like the doctor's office or Mirena pamplets made it out to be - definately more trouble than it was worth.

I'm thinking of trying the non-hormonal one, even though my experience with mirena kinda sucked.

I have had 6 coils put in and out. It really hurts! But the benefits far outweigh the pain
