Hello Everyone. Last month I went to the ER with symptoms of what I thought was a stroke. Seeing double, weekness on my left side and then inability to speak what I wanted to say. These symptoms lasted on and off for about an hour. No lasting damage. After numerous tests, CT scan, CT Angio, MRI, Ultrasound, Ecocardio, EKG they said all those test came out fine. Cholesterol and blood sugar also OK.

They diagnosed me with a Dissected Carotid Artery. I was on Heparin for three days and then put on Coumadin for at least the next 3 to 6 months.

My question is this: I told my Neurologist that I read that if you have a TIA there;s a big chance you will have a stroke in the next few years. She said that didn't apply to me because I had "TIA like symptoms" but it wasn't a TIA. Have any of you heard this? How do they know the difference between a TIA and just TIA like symptoms.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Thanks for asking. Well, it's been 10 months now and all is well. At 3 months I had a CT Scan that showed the artery was very narrow. Then an Arteriogram (sp?) showed that my collaterol blood flow was very good so I've stayed on Coumadin and gotten on with life. I'll get another CT Scan in Sept. to see if it's opened back up.

I've read allot on the internet that says the vast majority of CAD's eventually correct themselves and the chance of recurrence is very rare. So that's good news.

Back when I posted the original question here I was really in the dark. I had a Neurologist that really didn't know much about CAD's.

I hope you have both made full recoveries now. I had a Carotid Artery Dissection in Oct 2008 and was frustrated how little infomation is available.

I created a 'Group' on one of the more popular social networking sites (it begins with an 'F'). Just type in 'Carotid Artery Dissection' in the group search and you'll find over 50 people who've had a dissection and shared all their experiences.

Best wishes

Robin
