Q: Intense pains in side & back better after vomitting
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 26th, 2007
I went to the hospital about two months ago because I was having intense pains in my side and back. I was given a prescription for Nexium and sent home. Now I am having even worse pains in my side.
I felt as though I had to vomit and when I did I felt better. However, I would like to know what could this pain be and what to do if it returns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

According to your description of the abdominal pain, it is hard to guess at what might be causing it. Pain might be due to causes as diverse as gallstones, a peptic ulcer, appendicitis, gastritis… If vomiting stops the pain, perhaps this is caused by a stomach disorder like peptic ulcer, gastritis etc. You may need several diagnostic procedures to find out the reason for that pain, including:
1. A physical examination;
2. Blood analyses (blood count, sedimentation, liver status, renal status, Helicobacter pillory…);
3. An abdominal ultrasound;
4. Gastroscopy, etc.

You can consult an internal medicine specialist about your condition and to request the diagnostics.
