Pain After Crown Fitted
Posted: 11-24-07 12:09pm

Hi

I had a crown fitted 10 days ago. The tooth had already been root filled in past, so no nerve.

I had the tooth prepped and crown fitted without any injection.

All went well, though since I had the crown fitted; I've had pain from the tooth. It hurts a little if you tap it and bite down on hard food. The pain subsides after contact.

I was going to go back to the dentist but don't want to waste his time if a possibilty it will go?

I had a root canal in September and a crown put on in mid-October. I had a bit of sensitivity to biting for almost a month afterward and the sensitivity to hot/cold is just now subsiding (in January).

I see that it's been nearly two months since you posted this. Has the pain gotten better?

Hiya

Biting down isn't so much of a problem now, but if I say tap it hard with my finger, still a little sensitive.

I gather from research that crowns are normally, just fused together with base of tooth, though I had a rod inserted in mine. I know beforehand the dentist said the amount of root was 50/50 if it could be crowned.

However after x-ray he said root was enough to be crowned. I wonder if the rod has added senstivity to the tooth. However with no nerve I can't see how I can feel any sensesation?

Well, you have to figure that the entire nerve can't be completely dead (I'm not experienced in this, but I gather there has to be a point somewhere where the nerve picks back up and is living, again, as it gets back to the central nerves).

Is there a possibility the pain could be coming from the gum area beneath or around the crown and it's just indistinguishable from tooth pain because of the location? Have you seen your dentist again since the crown fitting?

If your next cleaning is less than a month away, you may just want to hold out, see if it gets better and mention it on cleaning day if it doesn't. If it isn't, you may just want to ring them up and mention that you're still having some sensitivity when you tap the crown; they may be able to suggest something or they may want to see you to make sure everything's alright.

I have to go for a clean next month so will hold out till then. The pain isn't massive, but as I say if I tap it then it's sensitive. I know the crown fitting was close to the gum. The orginal tooth crown broke off over time and the root base in the end was below the gumline.

The sensitivity might be due to the rod being inserted and borderline root to attach too?

I'll mention it next time when up there, but really don't want to go down the route of having the crown taken out and replaced.

I should go to the dentist as soon as posible your problem is that when the crown is high it make a premature contact with the opposite tooth and you feel pain in the periodontium that is the ligament that support the teeth ,is this trauma keeps going on it could be a bone and ligament lession ,so go this eek to your dentist , is a short visit he just going to do a bite adjustment on the crown....well good luck...and let me know...
