Bruxism - will mouthguard reduce size of jaw muscle ?
Posted: 11-23-07 09:16am

im only 17 years old, but i feel like for the last year, maybe even longer, i've been clenching or grinding my teeth at night. Two of my front teeth are worn down, and my masseter muscle is sticking way out. I used to have a much softer jawline and i looked a lot better, but now it just sticks out really far and does not look good.

I recently went to the dentist and they said to use a mouthgaurd. The thing is, the mouthgaurd doesn't reduce the size of the jaw muscle does it? it just stops the problem from getting worse. I want it to actually improve, so i read about botox which reduces the size of the muslce as well as stops bruxism better than a mothgaurd. I called up different dentists and they all said that only specialists do it, and you have to get a recommendation from a dentist, and this can happen only after nothing else works. The thing is i already know that the other things won't work because they're not supposed to accomplish what i want.

Will the mouthgaurd actually reduce the size of the jaw muscle, or will is just take the punisment of the clench instad of my teeth?

and

What is the best way i can convince my dentist to make a recommendation for botox, with me not actually trying the moiuthgaurds or splints?

botox isnt a good idea--its expensive and only lasts 3-5 months and then you have to go back. You cant convince him if he doesnt think that it is good and not only that he wont do anything agressive untill he has tried all conservitive methods of treatment first.

I have had experienc with a certian kind of doctor and i no longer grind and this would also help that muscle. you more than likely clench because of stress. there is really no way to help that except for you to relax and reduce stress. have you gone to a chiropractor?

i can find you a good doctor. just let me know. pm me at any time.

why is botox not a good idea, is it dangerous, or does it just not work. I've seen and read so many things about botox fixing the problem right away. People go through years of mouthgaurds, splints, muscles relaxers, etc. to than get botox and be fixed imediatly

Also, i would be fine with starting out with the conservitive methods of treatment first if they actually did what i need them to do. I really care more about the fact that bruxism has actually chnaged the apearance of my face from good looking to bad than anything else.

also...are you saying that if i reduce stress and stop bruxing, that it will make my muscle normal again?? I've never heard of muscles getting smaller except from botox or surgery

botox only lasts for 3-4 months and then you have to go back and have more done. its really expensive. muscles will go back--you have to let them. no doctor is going to do any thing wether it fixes it or not unless they try all the conservative methods first. patience is key.
