Is mononucleosis bacterial or viral? Does everyone get mono at some time? How does mono spread? Basic facts and definitions about "the kissing disease". ...
Do you know what causes mono? Although children are more at risk than adults, what can you do to avoid getting sick from mono? Review risk factors here....
The symptoms of mono may not manifest for everyone who contracts the Epstein-Barr virus. But when are symptoms serious? And when should you seek medical help?...

Q: Duration of Fever W/ Mono

Our 22-year old son has had a fever (as high as 103.3) for 7 days. He went to the student health center at college and was told he had a virus. When the fever and pain (abdominal and throat plus non-specific aches) persisted, he went to student health again two days later and had blood tests and a throat culture. They diagnosed mono, negative for strep, nothing alarming w/ blood counts.

He took Advil regularly for 5 days, then a couple of days ago, switched to Tylenol to see if that would bring the fever down. He is home now...the NP at student health wants to see him Monday even if he is feeling better. (It is the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving as I write this.)

His appetite is OK (although not robust) and, as a runner, he knows the importance of proper hydration. He is drinking water, Gatorade, and some fruit juice.

My question: Should we be alarmed that the fever persists even with the Advil and Tylenol? At 4 this morning, his fever was 103.3.

Thanks!

I would like to know the same thing really. My 14 year old has mono and he has had a fever of 103 for 3 weeks and I am not too sure how long this is supposed to go on. I am very concerned for him as he has no appitite and doesn't even want to open his eyes...he is drinking lots of water but a couple days ago he threw up when he ate. We have been back to the doctor and gotten a prescrption for anibiotics for the step throat that he has as well but still the fever is persistant.

Mono!
I currently have Mono as well. I was diagnosed with it 3 weeks ago but it started a month ago. I have had fevers for nearly the whole time. I started out with Fevers that were consistent at 100 for nearly a week and a half or so. The past 4 days they have been as high as 102.9. It seems every time I get a fever now it makes it up to 102.Advil and Tylenol dont seem to do anything and I am really frustrated. I am 19 and work at a child care center, and am in college. Tuesday I have to withdraw from my classes because there is no way I can function like this... Not thrilled. The doctors are no help. I feel like there could be more going on but being diagnosed with Mono is like being diagnosed with everything in the book. They believe every symptom I have is related to mono... What if it isnt? All they say get plenty of rest and drink lots of water! I have a severe cough, they gave me Tussionex, it helps last 12 hours taste awefull. And to help sleep they gave me tylenol with Codeine. Worth asking about if you have issues with sleeping.

I see the posts were a while ago, how long did it take for your children to get better?
