throat tightening
I'm so glad to find this site. My throat seems to tighten up whenever I exert myself, especially outside. Now, this does sound like asthma, but the thing is, I don't feel short of breath from my lungs, I feel pain and tightening just in the throat. I am a cancer patient and get alot of chemo, but because of that, I get scanned and examined regularly. Not showing anything. And ideas?

Throat tightening
Wow! Me too for about 7 years. Nothing particularly seems to trigger it but feels like someone is trying to strangle me. It doesn't affect my breathing or swallowing. Doctor's don't seem to think it's a problem... but it is a bit unnerving! I do have hypothyroidism, diagnosed nearly a year ago and a vitamin B12 deficiency that makes me dizzy! Both are being treated but the B12 thing seems to reoccur lots. If I was a cat I'd be for it!

Ive had this feeling of a lump in my throat for 3 months, recently a tightning feeling has been happening, which is really frightning. My GP said he couldnt see anything and said it could be due to acid reflux.( I also have a Hiatus Hernia) I was given omeprazole, which seemed to help for a few days, but then it came back worse than ever. I find that it is worse as the day goes on, but disappears when i wake up. I'm so relieved to find this site and that i'm not the only one.

tighening of throat
My son is 10 years old and he gets the tightening of his throat. Sometimes when he is eating other times when not eating. He gets it everyday at different times of the day. He said it feels like his throat tightening and sometimes feels like something is stuck in his throat. He did say that when he tries to take another deeper breath it helps a little, not all the time, but he does panic sometimes when its bad. This has been happening for approx 6months but seems to be everyday now. He had a barium swallow done but that came back ok. The only thing they said was that during the swallowing of the barium test it took longer than normal to reach his stomach, but there were no blockages etc in his throat. I dont know where to go to from here because so many tests etc are being talked about to elimate different things. He is only 10 & I dont want to put him through all different tests if I dont have to. Any suggestions would be great. Thankyou

I would take him to a naturopathic doc and do an elimination diet. It's where you cut out all dairy, wheat, corn, soy etc. Or you can start journaling what he is eating for that day. Problem is though that it could be an allergy from something he ate two to three days prior. I hope this helps!

I don't know about this, but i have this exact same problem, except mine is caused by stress. A lot of times what helps is just drinking some hot tea, and laying down. Even sleeping for just a little bit helps a lot.

I've been having this problem as well, and I don't really have any insurance so seeing a doctor is out of the question for now.

Still trying to cope with the tightening and the constant mucous drip, but its getting increasingly difficult. Other than that, I have difficulty doing the simplest tasks unless I force myself. I think I'm suffering from anxiety, depression and fear of what this is, because I still don't see a lot of information about it, and the threads I do see show a lot of surgery and no real cure.

Drinking a lot of water helped me a little bit yesterday, but the lump is still back.

I'll keep looking in this thread for more information. Thanks for making this site/thread!

I have had throat soreness, tightness & an odd lump sensation just below my adams apple. I have been to the doctor so many times, Bloodwork, xrays, CAT scan, & a scope of my throat all showed nothing. The doctors say it is either acid reflux & or anxiety issues (globus) I want more tests - this is driving me crazy!! For anyone suffering demand testing - when it all comes back normal you won't have the anxiety & I'm told the lump sensation will go away. Globus is often misdiagnosed & to demand more tests is important to rule out serious conditions of the throat, larynx & esophogus. Good luck everyone & know you are NOT alone & you're NOT crazy!!

Heaviness in throat???
I have had tightening in the throat and this uneasy feeling of heaviness in the throat for about 3 weeks now. Does anyone experience a heavy feeling? I do not have insurance and will have to save money before I go... Other than Advil and allergy meds... any advice?

Tight Throat
Hellooo I have too suffered with tight throat but mine includes difficulty swallowing. Am on Thyroid med and iodine. I had oral thrush when it began and so I changed my diet and am talking with a Holistic Nutritionist. I also have bite or occlusion problems and TMD Temporal Mandibualar Disorder. I went to a occlusion specialist and am awaiting a new orthodic or mouthguard to correct my bit and heal my TMD. I have sought the Lord a lot lately and it has brought me close to Him. It is a weird ordeal.

I have had this throat problem for over a year now. It all started feeling dry and hard to swallow with a lump feeling and my doctor said it was anxiety. The doctor tried me on acid reflux tablets then sent me to the ENT. They didnt find anything and said its anxiety. I started to believe this and started taking st johns wort, it relaxed the anxiety but the feeling was still there. I've gone to my doctors hundreds of times and now they are saying its a post nasal drip and gave me a course of nasonex which didnt work. The doctors then said its a Globus Pharyngeus. I demanded I want it investigating again and now are refering me to the ENT again. My throat has since got worse and now its affecting me when I talk, When I talk to someone my voice cracks and it feels like I can't breath and happens daily. I also have to keep clearing my throat which makes it hard to breath. I clear my throat when I talk all the time. I have been back to the doctors lots of times and they keep saying its anxiety and they don't seem concerned. I even went to the A+E the other day because it is making me feel so scared I feel like I'm going to choke when I speak. The A+E sent me home saying anxiety as well. I am now feeling so sad about this and geting depressed because of the fear I'm going to die. I just want to be normal and stop having this problem and live a normal life. I'm waiting for my appointment for the ENT and hope its soon. my life has stopped since having this I don't want to go out anymore and when I do I make sure I have a bottle of water with me all the time. my doctor told me last week to use the sauna and steam room everyday. I have been going to which made this feel alot worse when I was in there I was talking to someone when I was in the steam room and my voice cracked and I felt like I couldn't breath this has happened each time I go. I just have one wish in the world for this to go away and live a normal life. I now avoid talking to people because talking makes this worse. This has made me cry for the last few days and I'm feeling depressed how this has made me become. I found when I suck lemon and honey lockets throat sweets that it soothes it. when I cry the feeling in my throat goes away and I can talk better. I'm so glad that i'm not alone with this because I was starting to think I'm going crazy. I will try cutting out soft drinks and my tooth paste for a week and see how that is. The only time I don't feel this problem is when i sleep at night

I feel the same way. This has been going on for about a year, but it's becoming worse. I have a constant need to swallow. It feels like there is mucous stuck in the back of my throat. It feels like my throat is swollen. It drives me crazy!!
I've seen my regular doctor about it. She tells me it's allergies and puts me on allergy meds. No change.
I went to see an allergist. I went through allergy testing. I am allergic to cats, grasses, molds. I already knew that. I don't get sneezing or runny nose. Just post nasal drip.
Allergist put me on Singular. Didn't help.
I went to ENT..thinking it's sinus...nope. They did an MRI and all was ok.
I've been on Allegra, Singular, Zyrtec, Claritin, Nasonex, Nasacort AQ, Asterpro. Waste of $$ because nothing has worked.
I'm gettting so frustrated. I don't know what else to do. I think something else is going on here.

Swallowing problem
http://www.cricopharyngealspasm.com/ Could be this or anither muscle that is having a spasm, sip on water maybe take some magnesium as this is a muscle relaxant and can help. I have had the same thing of feeling that there is mucous stuck, mine stareted after a chiropractior did a neck adjustment. I did have a strangling feeling that has calmed down but on and off i have the mucous feeling at the back of my throat, I have talked to a specialist and she thinks it muscle spasm caused by the neck injury. These spasms can just start for no reason also. If you think there is more going on it would pay to look up a Swallowing Institute in your area if you have not already done this. I hope this post helps as I understand how these symptoms effect your daily life.

i have the a similar problem, caffeine, marijuana and greasy foods seem to irritate it. It is often accompanied by an intermittent pain in the my right chest and back. Best thing to do is cut out certain activities (like pot or coffee) entirely for adequately long stretches (week or more) and find correlations.
It is amazing how poorly equipped doctors are to elicit symptoms from patients, and to investigate these symptoms. If you give them the full range of symptoms described in the way they'll recognize, they'll diagnose you correctly (usually) - but many diagnosticians are poor detectives, they're essentially crappy search engines.

Throat Tightening
I have had these same issues now for about 1 1/2 years and have been through all the tests named in these 2 pages. Nothing has made the throat better. Now i can't drink any liquids unless I'm alone in a room and even then only through a straw. Unfortunately through all these posts, no one has a solution. I have now come up with two things that I started at about the same time the throat tightening happened, I had found out I was lactose intolerant and started using lactaid pills, and I started using a brita filter for all my drinking water. Has anyone else used either of these and had the same problem??

Its funny you say that, my husband is lactose intolerant so I have been drinking lactaid milk instead. I too have been using a Brita filter. But, I have only noticed a recent (and drastic) increase in this problem of throat swelling and discomfort, and I've been drinking lactose-free milk and filtered water for almost 2 years. I was going to attribute it to weight gain, but after reading this post I'm wondering if it's something more. Someone mentioned heat making it worse, where I am it is 115 degrees today, so that might be part of it also? I want to see a doctor soon but I can't say this discussion board has encouraged me to do so...

Tight throat, stress, anxiety, unknown
I have been getting these same symptoms (tight throat, chocking sensation, lots of mucus and throat clearing, alot worse at night) as everyone else on here for about 5-6 months now. I have been to doctors sooo many times and every time they have no solution or give some random antibiotic or attribute it to anxiety problems. I believed it was anxiety for quite some time, I started going to a psychologist and still do for this but nothing has gotten better. In fact it has only become worse.

I was given valium to stop my stress, but this did nothing to help. It is very strange because I started to get it a couple of weeks after I stopped drinking alcohol, caffeine and smoking weed. I thought stopping these things would be good for me Sad

I hope that someone can have a solution or at least something I can try that isn't listed in this thread already. I will keep you posted on my progress. This is really stressing me out now and it sure doesn't help my anxiety.

Hi I'm 21 years old I've had this lump in my throat for about two weeks now. It started off one night when I was laying down sleeping I thought my throat was closing up went to the emergency room because I don't have insurance to go to a real doctor they did tests on my heart and lungs and found nothing...I am asthmatic but it was not the cause...it progressively got worst when I started getting major pressure in my head that in turn spread to my chest, neck, and shoulders....the last trip I made to the hospital told me that I had a ulcer and it was the acid coming up so I've been on two ulcer medications since then but doesn't seem to correct the problem..........my throat seems to stay dry and it always feels like I'm having a hard time breathing in like the oxygen isn't getting to my lungs but when I was at the hospital my oxygen levels were at a 100% my boyfriend thinks it might just be anxiety....I don't know what it is I just want to be normal again

First thing to is change your toothpaste. For 3 month I experience a mucous lump and in my throat. After alot of testing. Thyroid and ENT said acid reflux. I was put on antidepressents cuz of overwhelming feeling of not being about to breath. Well it dawn on me one day when i was brushing my teeth I rinsed my mouth and notice I had white film on my cheeks and tongue I had changed toothpast 3 months ago. colgate Total. All this time that film sets on checks and tongue as you swallow it down your throat and then set there and starts slouging of your tissue gather mucous. I have other tell me that sometime the whitning and tarter control brand notice a peeling of the gums and cheeks. Get naural toothpast.

I hope this helps. Cuz I was about to rip my throat out at times. Others time I was exhausted by the anxiety. Feeling like my throat was going to close up. Plus I am mad that I had to spend all this money on doctors and mediations on a 5 dollars tube of toothpast made my life miserable. I felt lumps coughed, dry throat, burning, mucous that would not cough out, strangling feeling and swallowing pills were not fun.I changed my diet and no effect. I had no energy and lost work time.
Let alone all the unnecessary meds. I have called my ENT and told him about my discovery.

this is such a bizarre condition! i'm sad to say that i've experienced symptoms for the last 13 years and have tried so many different things (and spent so much money) trying to find THE cure. i've gone down the medical route, had the camera down the throat and the doctors saying everything was fine... been prescribed lorazepam which kind of worked but i didn't want to be on benzos for the rest of my life. i've had speech therapy several times with different therapists, none of which have worked. i've been to an osteopath that specialises in vocal chord dysfunction - he very painfully manipulated my larynx and the muscles around my neck - that didn't work. i've had the alexander technique, rolfing (structural integration), even been hypnotised... and the symptoms still persist. the symptoms i experience are:

-tightness of the throat that often comes on without any clear reason... other times may be related to a large and heavy meal, drinking alcohol or physical exertion
-constant throat clearing (must be annoying to people around me!)-tightening when i travel by plane which makes me think it's related to pressurestrangely, my throat is best and relaxed the whole day when i am hungover - does anyone else experience this???

also, not many people have talked about how it impacts their voice. do people find that it does? for me it feels like my voice is high up in my throat rather than resonant in my chest... i'm unable to talk loudly or shout so loud places fill me with anxiety (a bit of a chicken and egg situation here - what comes first, the sensitivity to the noise causing the anxiety and tight throat or the tightness causing the anxiety? either way, it's horrible and really affects my social life). i am a yoga teacher but find my voice tires quickly when having to project it so it becomes weak and thin. leading to more anxiety...

sigh.

it's incredible that so many people experience this (or something similar) but that it's still not understood.

Please see if you have silent reflux. It does cause throat tightness. I have the same problem. I take Famotidine twice daily to keep it down. Sometimes it creeped up without notice and I started feeling throat tightness, stiff neck again until I took the med then it went away. I also felt a lump in my throat but after I wear a night guard for my TMJ and adjusted my sitting position at work, I no longer feel the lump. I am now battling a chronic sinus problem. It causes post nasal drip and also trigger my throat tighness at times...not fun!

I am a bit surprised that you are a yoga teacher and have this condition: as yoga should help you release anxieties. However, you do sound like a very anxious person - not a criticism, just an observation. I have experienced this symptom today for the first time and am searching the net now for answers. It seems the more frequent reason is stress and anxiety. I have to agree that today I had reasons to be very anxious. Perhaps if we are sort of quite strong emotionally then anxiety doesn't manifest itself as a feeling of fear but just as an effect on body. In addition, it is all about the throat chakra, so anxiety related to expressing oneself perhaps can be one of the reasons. Somebody else here stated that it's good to lie down and sleep. That's what I did and it helped a little bit. In addition, try to strengthen the inner space within yourself - keep saying nothing can be more powerful in your space than you!

Hello - I am 30 and this past summer I started getting the whole throat thing. It began as my arms and legs feeling heavy because I could not breath all that well. My throat feels like someone was grabbing it and choking me. My head feels like it is going to explode at night; like there is pressure on it and I have such a hard time explaining this to anyone. I made an appointment with the ENT, but now after finding this I don't know if I should go. My mouth is constantly dry as well and I get ringing in my ears at times. I didn't grow up with a cat, but when I got married my wife had one. We still have the cat and I wondered if that was part of it. After reading all this; we did switch to the brita filters this year. I am wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Anyone have advise for me? I will say that I played football and I know my neck is not 100 percent, but not bad enough to cause issues (so I think).

I thought it was food allergies; mostly pasta sauce and beer.
