I used to think that I must be eating something that I am slightly allergic to and that my throat was closing up a bit. Later I started to have some problems that lead me to see an endocronologist. Turns out that I have an auto immune disorder called hashimoto's thyroidistis. One symptom is an enlarged thyroid which causes you to feel like you have lump in your throat. I would ask your doctor to refer you to an endocronologist and have them run some blood test to see if that could be it.

Tightening of throat
I too have had a tightening of the throat for about 8 monts now. I started to eliminate foods from my diet. It seemed to help. I eliminated wheat, dairy, eggs, all sweets and nuts from my diet. I am slowly adding foods back in. I read about apples being a problem so I cut my up and mircowave them. When the tightening of the throat happens, it feels like I am about to stop breathing. I read other posts and will look at toothpastes and try to stop caffeine. It is very scary and has changed my life.

I get the feeling like my throat is swollen and burns alot. And i've gotten that after a food reaction and when I get a return of my oral thrush. Have you tried sudafed 12 hr relief for any sinus dripping. I was told that a nasal drip can cause that.

But I think that's the easy answer. Mine is always more complicated due to my having rare allergic reactions to insects and mold. Yes, I said insects. If you have any questions about that, i'm here.

Throat Tightening
I was so relieved to see that others have experienced this since it can be frightening and you often feel like no one understands. Over the years I went to several doctors and no one could tell me what was causing my throat tightening. Some ideas were, stress, thyroid (although I was tested 3 times for thyroid and it always came back normal). It was becoming increasingly worse so I FINALLY went to a natureopathic doctor and sure enough it was severe allergies to dust, mold, dog and cat, plus dozens of food allergies. I was allergic to everything since my immune system was a mess from taking antibiotics and killing all the good flora in my system (my tests results came back with zero good bacteria). I'm feeling a thousand times better after going on a special diet, eliminating certain foods and taking probiotics and lots of supplements to kill the yeast and rebuild my immune system!!! Good luck and do not rely on Western Medicine...... Very Happy

I have the exact same problem. My throat is tight like someone is sqeezing it. The swelling has extended to my lungs. I have had difficulty breathing. It feels as thought the air is going in, but not moving if that makes sense. I feel as if I can not fill my lungs. I started yawning not because I am tired, but like I am trying to fill my lungs. I am on two allergy/asthma meds. Doing allergy testing Mon. I breath better, but my throat still feels tight. Rain and warm days seem to do me in. My voice cracks under those circumstances.

Squezzing Neck
Have you been checked for a blood clot in your lungs? I had the feeling of someone squezzing my neck a week after I gave birth. My ob/gyn said to go to the ER ASAP. I had a blood clot in my lung and was put on blood thinner for six months.

Re: Throat Tightening
I have a throat tightening problem, but it seems to only happen when i'm around my mothers house and she has a dog and cat... It get bad at times, i have trouble breathing, it hurts at times because of the fact that my throat is closing up... I have a feeling that it's the pet dander, but not sure on that... And it's funny because before i had children I didn't have this problem ever and i lived with my parents for 20 years w/ dogs and cats.

I started having the throat tightening issue a few weeks ago. I got my bloodwork checked and my thyroid was normal. My husband thinks it is allergies, but I have had allergies my whole life and never had this issue. Another person suggested that my anxiety was causing this to happen. I have had a baby and just stopped nursing, I am not sure if this is a connection. I am not sure what is wrong with me, but it is good to know that I am not the only one feeling this.

Have you had your back checked? Discs can be out or problems in the neck can cause this sort of trouble.

Caffeine makes it way worse
Caffeine tends to close up your esophagus. I have a stricture. That is probably what you all have in addition to reflux and allergies.

I've been bothered by this tightening for four or so years. It seems to get worse at times. Seasons don't seem to have an influence. I drink 2 latte's a day and too much diet Pepsi. I wonder if the caffeine is having an impact on this feeling. I'm glad i'm not the only one. My niece has had thyroid issues, maybe it's in my families genes?

These posts are a couple of years old, and I am hoping you have your problem sorted by now. have you had your back or neck checked? Neck and back problems can cause you to have swallowing problems.

FOLKS! There is a very good chance that those who have had extensive medical testing with negative findings are allergic to the toothpaste we use. I have gone through several different brands, actually, ALL of them available on the shelves - same thing - at times it gets so bad that it causes depression and inability to perform daily tasks. All this went away when I bought a toothpaste that only has 4 ingredients -two of them natural oils, made in Eastern Europe/Russia? All symptoms went away.

throat tightening
For the last week and a half or so I have had the same feeling of throat tightening that everyone is describing here. I was also having pain in my upper back and shoulder area. I went to the doctor and all my tests were normal, which leads me to believe it is a severe form of acid reflux. The throat tightening showed up right about the time all those other symptoms did. I have been taking the 14 day stint of prilosec which seems to be helping so far. Also the relaxing with massages that other people have suggested has helped as well.

throat tightening
Thank you to all who responded. I too have had this for probably 20 years. When I told my doctor about mine, he sent me to a heart specialist, an ent doctor, and an internal med specialist, and scheduled an upper GI. My heart was normal. The ent guy checked for swelling and tumors (none) then gave me meds for anxiety (which I lost & they never did replace)and billed me for Globus. The internal doctor said they had a procedure where they stretched the throat but I could not imagine going through with that. My thyroid was normal. The GI doctors said I had a hiatal hernia and prescribed Nexium which did seem to help. I then went to an Acupuncture Physician and she told me in Chinese medicine the condition was known as Plum Pit Throat. She treated me for it and that seemed to help but did not totally relieve it. I also noticed a build-up of phlegm on occasion and concluded that I possibly had food allergies so I stopped eating dairy for two weeks and that really helped. When I started back on dairy, the phlegm reappeared. The same thing happened with bread and foods that contain preservatives or additives. I have also been a big coffee drinker but noticed that made my throat worse. So I gave up coffee, dairy, bread, and now meat and am living on fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds. I am much better but the throat tightening is not totally gone. I think I may have some acid reflux but I can not feel that. I just feel better when I eat less. So, what in the world is it?

Lump in the throat
Recently I have noticed that I have a lump in the throat which will not go away. It is exactly the type of lump that we get when we want to cry but cannot. In the daily grind it can be missed but its uneasy presence is always there in the background. When one thinks of it deliberately, one realises everything is not right with the throat.
Which doctor should I go to, ENT specialist or somebody else?

THATS exactly how it feels to me!! It comes and goes, but I don't want the Dr. runaround with a possible this or that diagnosis.

Choking sensation
Go to the ENT and gastroenterologist, this specialist knows about GERD and all esophageal issues which can cause choking. I am getting a gastroscopy on the the 31 of August. You will need referrals from your GP.

Tightening in the throat
I have had a lot of these symptoms happening for the last 22 years it started out when i was young. It would only happen when i was eating strongly flavoured foods, vinegar, spices, really oily foods, the occasional sip of alcohol from the parents glass etc. In the last 2-3 years it got much worse. one day i found myself not being able to breathe in properly but had no trouble breathing out. My throat was sore around my vocal box and i lost my voice. When i went to the ENT he told me my throat looked very very tight and that was all. asthma relievers didn't really do much and the doctors have been failing to help me with this problem. I stopped talking for 2 weeks to see what would happen and only wrote notes to people to communicate. it got better by doing that but eating strong foods would start it up again. An allergist i was seeing early on gave me an epipen but i still didn't know what the problem was. I got fired from my job, stopped eating, lost over 10kgs (im not on the heavy side at all), and stopped going out because i was terrified that everything was out to get me. STILL no one was willing to help!! finally i was referred to this allergy specialist that said it may be acid reflux and vocal chord dysfunction causing this problem. I was also sent to a speech therapist where i learnt about my vocal chords, what they and how they acted and did vocal stretches every day. I started on Nexium and now switch between Nexium and Somac. It seems to have helped but it is still happening slightly when i eat strong foods and even talk too much... its all still a mystery as no one has yet given me a diagnosis.

throat tightening
it comes from the central nervous system. it can be brought on by a number of factors ie too much caffeine is one and stress. I know this for fact. It can also happen if you are on medication which crosses the blood brain barrier. the best thing to do is to try and ignore it a. the more you think of it the more the muscles spasm. its the muscles spasming around the throat ie caused by stress and caffeine
