occassional Sharp Pains in left side, gallstones? Posted: 11-19-07 17:08pm
Hi. For the past few months I have been
having these weird pains. They are very
sharp and random. I thought it may have to
do with certain foods, but that doesn't
seem to be the case.
The pain usually occurs 3-4 times a month,
the pain is sharpest in my lower left
abdomen; however, it is painful in my
whole front stomach area from my chest to
my lower abdomen. I feel nausious (sp?)
when the pain occurs, but I never actually
vomit. I can ease the pain by laying
completly straight. The pain usually lasts
for less than 5 minutes, it comes really
quickly, and it dissapears quickly. Does
this sound like gallstones?! I'm don't
have much knoweledge on the human body, so
I don't know if it could be kidneys,
livers, gallstones etc.. I'm 19 years
old, and normal weight for my height. Any
ideas would be appreciated!!

Have you considered getting an MRI scan of
the region?

Any Help Would Be Appreciated Posted: 11-26-07 04:29am
My father is having similiar symptoms to
the one listed above but he is too
stubborn to go to the hospital. I work as
a dialysis technician so I am almost
positive that he is suffering from kidney
failure but I would like to find out if
there may be something else wrong. I don't
want to lose my father and I feel that
maybe if someone could give me a general
idea of what might be wrong I can convince
him to go and get looked at. He is having
sharp pains in his lower back and stomache
regions and he is vomitting a lot lately.
Please, any information anyone can offer
would be greatly appreciated

mommaman - you wont know until he has it
looked at. A renal ultrasound is a good
method if you are concerned about kidneys.
Stones or an obdstruction causing back up
into the renal pelvis could be a cause for
pain. Ultrasound can also rule out any
gross masses fairly well.
anony88 - most likely not gallstones.
Gallstone pain is usually epigastric
(above the stomach), in the right upper
quadrant, or shooting towards the back,
however other areas can be affected as
well. Left lower quadrant is unlikely with
gallstones. Also your age makes it less
likely too. I have never seen a 19 year
old with gallstones as of yet. What you
describe sounds more like a bowel issue.
Perhaps constipation or "irritable bowel
syndrome". Diverticulosis of the bowel or
a disease such as crohns is less likely.
It could also be a left ovarian cyst or
follicle. Hope this helps.
