Q: Gardnerella Vaginalis?

I have had this infection about 3 times on the last 3 years. The last treatment was for myself and my husband with the antibiotic "medtrodone" (spelling). Now, approx. 5 months later the symptoms are back. I am going to the doctor next week for check up so I will ask him to treat. My question is can you keep developing this infection in a 1 on 1 relationship? Was the medication ineffective in killing all the bacteria and now it has grown back slowly until I am symptomatic again? I did have this infection once or twice prior to my marriage and was treated with vaginal insert, so I know that I have had before, but I really thought the oral medication my husband and I took would clear it up. My last questions is can you get the bacterial vaginalis in an exclusive relationship if both people are faithful to each other only?

It is not just an std- it can be, but you can develop it like a yeast infection too. So yes, it can develop in a faithful relationship. The medicine should clear it up- if it doesn't, you need to go back to your doctor and get more. It seems more likely to me that it reccured from some behavioral cause or something. Do you get yeast infections? After you are treated for a bacterial infection, if you still have symptoms, you should get tested for a yeast infection because antibiotics can cause them.

But regardless, I'd talk to a doctor about it and discuss things you are doing that might be causing the infection.

Thanks
No, I don't think I have had a yeast infection, at least not that I was aware of. This has just be really frustrating for me. I am 49 and it seems like menapause may be setting in. I have had a hysterectomy, but I have my ovaries. I don't understand it and my husband doesn't either. We have been together for almost 3 years and I do believe excusively. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this type of bacterial infection in an exclusive relationship.

Not that one, but I've had other infections during my exclusive relationship.

Gardnerella Is Not An Std!!!
I'm only 19, and I became sexually active with my boyfriend in the past year, and I have had Gardnerella for months now.

My Gynocologist told me that some women struggle with Gardnerella and sometimes there's just not a whole lot you can do.

There are many factors that can cause your Gardnerealla or any type of Bacterial Vaginosis.

One factor may be sperm. If you are on a type of birth control, and you're not using condoms, sperm can really mess up the natural environment of your vagina because sperm is a BASE, it's not acidic.

After menstration, your vagina is more vulnerable to developing bacterial vaginosis because it is in a more base-like state.

You should talk to you gyno and look into getting a Vinegar Douche. It's just vinegar and water, and it can help return the bacteria in your vagina to an acidic state.

Other than sperm... there are other factors. Look at the lubricants you may be using. And really watch your hygiene. Don't use scented soaps often... and my gyno has also suggested eating yogurt (like Yoplait) which contains live cultures which will also help maintain a balance of bacteria!

Hope that helps... it's amazing how much you learn on the internet.
