I honestly couldn't tell you... unless you somehow pinched a nerve, have low blood circulation or slept on it for way too long... I have no answer for you. It'd be best to see a doctor if it persists or spreads!

left thumb numbness
I also have had numbness in my left thumb-kind of the outside edge of my hand from the wrist and including the outside edge of my pointer finger. This is new since yesterday with no apparent injury. Any ideas would be welcome.

thermoid,

Numbness is due to a disorder in a nerve or nerves. The thumb is innervated by the C6 nerve root in the cervical spine and the median nerve peripherally (if it is on the palmar side of the thumb). If it is on the back of the thumb, it is the radial nerve.

So, if the numbness does not go away, you should have it evaluated by a hand surgeon, neurologist, or physiatrist (specialist in PM&R - physical medicine and rehabilitation).

Good luck.

U seem to know quite a bit about this subject on some type of a doctor level, so with that, where is the radial nerve located? I've been having the same problem - numbnesson the top part of my left thumb where my nail is located, back to the knuckle. I already have sciatica on my right side, have had it for years, so I didn't know if my problem was spreading or if this is a totally different issue.

Thermoid,

Have you gone to a neurologist yet? How long did you wait before you went? What was diagnosis?

I too am having numbness in my left thumb and index finger. I'm also feeling some tightness in my left forearm. I don't think it's a heart attack or a stroke- I've been having this for about a little over a week.

Numbness in right thumb
I've been having numbness in my right thumb now for a few days. It seems to come and go though. If I'm laying down and have my arm bent it seems a little better. It's always worse in the morning though and is annoying when I try getting ready for the day. It is located on the palm portion of my thumb. I'm 26 (don't know if that helps at all) and would appreciate any thoughts regarding this!

numb left thumb feels like i have glue on my thumb
I have had problems with my neck for a while so I had a steroid shot into my neck about 3 weeks ago. Since the shot I have had numbness in my left thumb inside by my pointer finger all the way to my thumb nail. It feels like I have epoxy glue on my thumb I keep rubbing my thumb it feels so weird. Do you have any suggestions why?

johnancy,

If you were having a problem with the C6 nerve root, that would cause numbness and tingling in the C6 dermatome. That dermatome include the whole thumb and index finger.

Since it is only a small portion of the thumb that is involved, it is more likely to be a peripheral nerve problem. That area would be innervated by the median nerve and the digital nerves to the thumb.

If the condition persists, you should have it examined by your surgeon. Good luck.
