Q: Are false negatives possible in pregnancy blood tests?

I know this all is gonna sound really crazy, but I need some answers!!! I had sex last on July 15. I am on the pill, so I have gotten all 5 of my periods since then, only they've been lighter than normal (which could have to do with the fact that I'm on the pill.) So, I went to the doc on Oct 1 and told her that I had taken multiple hpt's and all were negative except 2 which had faint lines 2-4 hours after I took them. I then told her that I had a blood test done and it too came back negative. She didn't do an exam or anything, just ordered a quant blood test and sent me on my way. I got the test done, and it came back <1=not pregnant or no hcg found. That would have been done at like 12 weeks prego. So, I wasn't convinced still, so I went on to have 4 more blood tests done, which to no surprise, have all been negative. My last blood test was on Nov 8. I know that blood tests are very accurate, but I've also read about women never testing positive on a blood test. I know that I've gotten my period (lighter than normal, but bright red blood) and all but I can't seem to shake the feeling. I have what feels like movement in my lower stomach, lower stomach is harder than normal and a little rounder, and I've had frequent urination. I haven't had sex in a while, so I would be like 18 weeks now. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening when the person was indeed really pregnant? I'm so confused and need some answers. I'm going to the doc tomorrow and I'm so scared he's gonna say I'm pregnant! And no, I don't want to be, so it's not that making me feel this way.

why would you still think you are pregnant when all the tests come back negative?

a 'feeling' doesn't mean anything at all.

i am 99.9% sure you ARE NOT pregnant

I have to say I know it's really crazy for me to still be thinking this way! I work in a behavioral health unit and my co-workers think I'm crazier than some of the patients! LOL! I get what feels like kicking in my lower stomach,(although it happens in my upper stomach, arms, legs, and back sometimes!) but I get that in my lower stomach at least 4 times a day, frequent urination, and my stomach has gotten harder and rounder here in the last couple of weeks. I don't even know what to think! I think I'm probably being overly paranoid and it's making me feel this way! LOL!

Yes. You are being overly paranoid. You are not pregnant. Pregnancy tests - multiple tests - do not lie.

Please show statistics about blood pregnancy tests being inaccurate. Hearing rumors and stories is not the same. Wink

You aren't pregnant.

It may just all be in your mind.
If you've got more than 5 negative blood tests then I'd say you're in the clear.
And the two home preg tests that you weren't sure about? If they came up negative at first then thoes are negatives too. Only read the results in the given time period.

Just take some deep breaths, your doctor will probably give you the answer you're hoping for. Good luck!

I always read and ask questions on yahoo answers and have had women on there tell me that they've never shown positive on a blood test and it took months to show on a blood test for no apparent reason. They said the doc couldn't even explain why it happened. I know you can't believe everyone that posts to you. I always used my period to know that I wasn't pregnant too, but they also say that the pill will bring on your period even if you are pregnant due to withdrawal from the hormones. I don't know, I know I'm overly paranoid. One of the therapists I work with told me yesterday that I needed to go see a doc and get some nerve pills. LOL! I think she's right!

Hrm. Well, blood tests aren't going to lie @ 18 weeks pregnant. And, to put your mind at ease - during a first time pregnancy, a woman will not feel the feelings you are feeling until later. Movements aren't all 'arms & legs', they are very gentle bumps, almost gas like bubbly feelings. Not movement in your back, etc.

It sounds to me like you have a pseudocyesis or false pregnancy. You should see someone to talk to about this.

The movements are like little bumps, but I feel them. Could be gas though. I know in my mind I'm not pregnant, but I still just can't shake the feeling! I've honestly, as stupid as it sounds, have never in my life been this scared! I think once I go to the DR tomorrow, I'll feel better, unless he does say "Hey, you're pregnant!", and I think I'll probably hit the floor! I'll let you guys know what he says though! Thanks for confirming my craziness to me!! LOL!

OK, I know I know! I'm just as agitated at myself as you all are! It's crazy! Sorry! I only have to wait until tomorrow to go to the doc and get myself straightened out. Thanks!

How many HPTs have you taken along with all those negative blood tests? YOU ARE NOT PREGNANT.

What will this last doctor have to do that convinces you that you are not pregnant? All the other times you still thought you were pregnant despite the negative tests. I'm really very curious why your super special secret pregnancy would be the only one ever to be like this. Wink And that isn't being deragotory, that is just... well, the truth. I mean, how unlikely is this scenario? If you were on the other side you'd be saying the same thing.

I know, I would be telling someone else that they are CRAZY!! It's nuts! Something like this is not likely at all, and I even had a doc tell me that! I know that! So, why can I not convince myself?? I know you aren't being deragotory, but I wouldn't blame you if you were, because like I said, I'm so frustrated with myself! I just wanna be happy and care-free again. And by the way, I've taken probably 30 HPT's which none were positive within the time frame of 10 minutes. Your honesty has helped and made me laugh! Thanks, considering honestly I usually am crying wondering if I've A.)gotten pregnant or B.)gone nuts! LOL!

You should be speaking with someone as to why you would still consider the fact that you are pregnant, given your massive amounts of money you have spent on pregnancy tests and doctor's visits. I, too, would be concerned if I were you as to why I'd want to hold onto the unrealistic and completely illogical notion of pregnancy from someone I am no longer seeing.

I know, I think I'm gonna talk to one of my friends today that's a therapist, and see what she says. I'm really glad for you all being up front and honest with me. It's kind of slapped me back into reality, which I needed obviously! I'm getting ready to leave for work, but I will keep you guys posted!!! Thanks!
