Sharp Pain In Form of Back Spasm??
Posted: 11-13-07 09:50am

This just started yesterday, I am getting this sharp pain in my back, it is on the lower inside edge of the rib cage. It hurts to breath deep, and any sudden movements causes my back to spasm, and sends me through the roof? What could it be?

Hello Willsk,

I would recommend that you seek professional medical advice, especially from a spine surgeon/neurosurgeon. It would not be proper for any of us to make a quess. Make sure the doctor takes an x-ray and even better MRI images.

I wish you the best, and DON'T delay.

Hi Willsk,

Did anything precede the onset of your symptoms? Woke up that way? Gave all the neighborhood kids horseback rides on your back? Had a rock climbing accident? Anything?

Regardless of the answer to the question regarding the onset of your symptoms, I agree with RichT, right up to the point that I’m not sure that you should necessarily seek the services of an ortho or neurosurgeon just yet. If your symptoms persist I might be inclined to encourage you to first see your GP or family physician.

I say this for several reasons. First of all specialist (surgeons) are expensive. Secondly your family practitioner can and will obtain xray’s and order MRI’s and other test if they feel it is warranted. Most surgeons will be looking for a full workup prior to their evaluation, and you may not actually need their services once a workup is completed.

Good luck and best wishes,
Tyton

I wish it were that esay too. In most cases you can't get into see a specialist without a referrel from you GP anyway. At least in my cases it has been like that. Even with insurance I had at the hospital (Aetna). Shame, it really is.
