Hi, about 2 yrs ago, I had C-spine fusion C5-6, they removed bone and replaced it with donor bone, then placed titanum plate and 4 screws. My question, seeing as how my Dr didn't answer me, how long does this plate and screws stay in?

I am having feelings like something is blocking my throat once in a while I can feel something there when I swollow. Is something wrong.

I cannot go back to the original Dr, because he quit the clinic where I was going and the clinic does not take my insurance anylonger. And I don't know where the Dr is. Help...

Sounds Normal to Me.
Hi Moe,

Except in the event of hardware failure while your fusion is healing, and I’m assuming that 2 years post surgery your fusion has fused, it is unusual to ever remove this hardware. Even in the event of hardware failure, the hardware is usually replaced and not removed.

The “blockage” or “chocking” sensation that you’re periodically experiencing is a normal and common side affect from anterior fusions, and usually doesn’t go away. It is likely that you are occasionally feeling the hardware when you swallow; there is nothing wrong and nothing that you can do to change it.

Best Wishes,
Tyton

Cervical Anterior Fusion
I disagree with this reply.

I had a 3 level spinal stenosis (Cervical) and had 2 replacement discs and an anterior fusion plate.

Admittedly, immediately after surgery, because the windpipe and vocal cords etc had been moved aside to permit access, my swallow reflex didnt work very well. However, 6 months down the line everything feels normal.

I cant feel the plate at the front at all (it occassionally aches at the back if Ive been sitting awkwardly or over doing the exercise)and swallowing large medication can sometimes be a problem, but apart from that nothing.

I'd get it checked out....

My consultant/surgeon is German but works in the UK privately and for our NHS service.

Privately he works at St Anthonys Hospital in Cheam in Surrey...

On the NHS he works at Mayday Hospital in Croydon in Surrey...

His name is Michael Kotrba MD and he's noted as a pioneer in his field... He also has a really good sense of humour and a knack of putting you at your ease.

If its possible I would highly recommend him...

Good Luck
Debbie
