I just found a huge flea on the dog! Sad
I put flea treatment on her last friday-which I put on her every month to prevent fleas.
And now today shes got fleas? Why? Ugh!
What should I do, vacume everything, wash all her bedding....what else? And what about more flea treatment?
Ah im freaking out.

edit I managed to squeeze that big flea off her, but there were like black bits around where the flea was....are hey flea eggs?

Are you sure it wasn't a tick? When you squeeze those off a dog, the jaws of the tick can get left behind.. not good.

What kind of flea treatment do you use? Most of the ones from the stores do not work (in the US anyways) we use frontline or frontline plus and we get it directly from our vet. Daisy had a problem with that not working at first, so they ended up using the next dosing size, for dogs 22lbs (mind you she's not even 5lbs)
So it may be the treatment not working into the dogs body. Flea eggs are white (I believe) the black you see around it would be flea dirt (poop, which is dried blood really)
Keep the floors vacuumed well (every day) and you can sprinkle 20 mule team borax on the floors, and leave it for awhile before vacuuming. It's a laundry detergent, sort of. It's in that department of the store anyways.
Also, Zanny is right, make sure it wasn't a tick

hopfulmjz and zanny are right..it possibly was a tick. And the spots where probably the waste from it. Ticks have 8 legs (class Arachnida) and fleas 6 (class Insecta). Fleas usually will move quickly and try to get away, while the tick is actually embedded into the skin of the animal. If it was a tick, make sure you remove the mouth parts (not sure if they have mandibles or a proboscis), because it may cause an infection.

This generally what a tick looks like.

And this is what a flea generally looks like

I understand that.. I dont like em either, but I do find them interesting. When I was doing and internship this past summer at an Audubon Center in San Antonio we found them everywhere. They were not the only creepy crawlies though. I had a 6 foot snake hit my boot while doing field work... I jumped about 3 feet...lol.. so did the snake..I went one way, it went the other..almost cartoon like. I also took some nice rattlesnake pics (I was 4 ft away)... This place also had alot of different spider species.... one of them freaked the begeebees out of me, cuz I kept running into them in the brush.

sick_mama what do you use for fleas?

fleas can create a resistance to some flea meds
if you use heartz then i wouldnt even waste your time. however if you want to get rid of everything ASAP then wash your dog with regular dish soap. make sure it doesnt have a bleach alternative in it.
also if you have a vet near by there is a pill you can buy for only 4 dollars it gets rid of fleas within 20 minutes
its a monthly pill you can give your dogs to guarentee no fleas.

also steer away from flea collars. they dont work either.

oh and mandi is right! flea eggs kindof look like dandruff thay are white or grey and pretty tiny
fleas lay ther eggs on the back of the neck, behind the ears and the tail.
also mandi said to vacum your carpet
first sprinkle some bakeing soda down and let it sit for 15 minutes then vacum
it will also help pull up dog hair and get rid of any smell too Smile

Hey Erick....I grew up near San Antone and I know what you are talking about. Scorpions were everywhere and we had to check our shoes every morning and learned not to run around barefoot. They are very painful if they sting you, too. I hate'em!

they are SOOO nasty. My Spitz had one after taking a romp in the neighbors yard that they refuse to mow.

My dad had to put a hot match on the end of it to get it to let go.
