Q: Tough Question..

I have been with my girlfriend for 4 years.. And she just informed of the fact that she had a single outbreak of genital warts around 10 years ago. We have had unprotected sex. I have never had any symptoms of genital warts (at least I don't think) she said that the case she had was very visible and very bad. She also has told me that none of her sex partners since the outbreak have acquired the virus. Is this possible? I know I should go to the doctor and get checked out. But i'm just curious about what i'm dealing with here as far as if her story is completely incorrect or what.

Ooh tough situation. Ok you're asking if it's possible her story is correct. It's possible. She could've had that one outbreak 10 years ago and never had another. Many people have a few initial outbreaks and never have another. Some others never get a wart, so they don't know they have the virus.

It's highly unlikely that none of her partners have gotten it though. Maybe she thinks this because they've never had a wart, but the virus is very contagious. Just because her incident was very bad doesn't mean they (or even you) would have visible warts. Different people's immune systems react differently.

You should definetely go to the doctor. And if you do end up having the virus, just stay healthy, don't stress too much and you should continue to be outbreak free.

How Effective Is Testing?
I know that there's no blood test for the virus. So if the doctor doesn't find anything, am I in limbo?

Unless it's a female (who will be given a pap smear), hpv is diagnosed by the doctor observing and examining the wart(s). So if there isn't an outbreak, it can be very hard to diagnose.

But since you're questioning whether or not your girl was being truthful about everything, it's best you go to and get checked out to make sure no other "secrets" pop up.

a New Variable Enters the Situation
Apparently she also has hsv as well as hpv. I can see that life can get worse. I've never shown any symptoms of hsv, I don't think either. Is there a blood test for hsv that's pretty accurate?

There is a blood test for hsv-1 and hsv-2. If you have herpes, your body will produce certain antibodies that will be detectable through blood work.
