Excellent drawing... I always sucked at doing human portraits...the eyes were always the hardest for me... is this a hobby or do you do it professionally?.... would love to see the finished piece.

WOW tanya you are seriously talented! Drawing a face that accurately is extremely difficult. Kudos to you, you are amazingly gifted.

Have you done any of Rowan? I heard that drawing babies is even harder because the porportions are all over the place...is that true?

neither, but I wish I could get paid for doing it! That is completely unrealistic though, which is why when I go to University I'm not focusing on art. If I didn't have Rowan I would just concentrate on art, but I have to feed her and keep a roof over her head and my art isn't going to buy groceries so I'm not going to bother focusing on it.

I'm still going to take some art in University, but then go to teachers college to become an art teacher. That way I still get to experience it.

I do art when it is assigned in school. I use to do it as a hobby, on my own time, but there really isn't such a thing as "my own time" now, so I don't spend any time doing stuff that isn't school related. I've got another sketch of Nathan in my sketch book that I will post, and a couple of other things.

I've done glazing on my pottery and I could do it over paints I use if I wanted that glazed effect, but I never have. I would be interested in trying it but then I'd have to go out and buy the mediums to do that.

I've used a lot of acrylics and water colours. The next painting I'm doing is going to be with oils though, I'm excited!

When I draw I don't draw specific things, I just draw in the lines and shading. We all have embedded ideas of what faces are suppose to look like, eye shape, proportions, location on the face, lips, ears, and if you go into a piece with those things in mind it is too hard to acurately draw what you "see", because those ideas will interfere. So when I'm drawing Nathan's face, I don't "draw Nathan's face". I draw in the lines, the shading, and the postive and negative space, and look at my refrences as just a set of lines and tones and not as something specific. That way my end result is way more accurate. If someone was to think like this when drawing a babys face, it shouldn't be any different or harder than drawing anything else.

You I ask because my uncle is an artist and he told me that in the "art community" they all say that babies are difficult and I think your art is wayyyyyy better than my uncles. I had Christians portrait done downtown old montreal by an artist and I found that he drew him too old. It looks like him but he looks like he's 3-4 yrs old.

actually i meant glazing with oils. it's the technique they used to use on all those old renaissance paintings to make them seem so lifelike. you just mix half and half linseed oil and paint thinner (turpentine or whatever you're using) and then whatever colour you are applying to the underpainting. so if you were doing the underpainting in sepia or whatever, you would apply the colour over that in layers. the layers are transparent because the pigment is thinned out so the more layers you add the deeper the colour gets. you can get really lifelike skintones and it gives the painting more depth. oil paints are awesome because they have that transparency and they almost glow compared to acrylics which turn flat and plastic-y when they dry. i really wish i could paint too but i don't have the room or the time right now. i took it in university and now i have to go back and get a teacher's degree too, lol. wish i would have been smart like you right from the beginning.
