I always wondered what other people thought of the muslim girls putting that thing on them where you can only see their eyes. So what do you guys think of that?

like any opinions on it? I have a girl at my school and she has worn it for about 4 years, and she completely hates it....weird huh? she said it made her stop believing in god, and that she is going to take it off very soon.

well there are several things

There are some Muslims who reject it vigorously but they agree with the headscarf.

and there are others who feel its the way women are supposed to be dressed.

well yeah i know that, there are alot more kinds of muslims. Like the ones who dont believe in hijab or anything else. I just never understood why a woman would need to cover her entire body and a man wouldn't? And when iwould ask my muslim friends they would never be able to explain it.

we had a muslim cleric and his wife at our church to talk about stuff like that and he said it should be a woman's choice to wear it and it is meant to honour her beauty and show her modesty and comittment to her husband. i guess it's like she is saying her beauty is only for her husband to see. the way he described it was nice. he said his wife doesn't wear it because she chooses not to and he doesn't mind but that other husbands or families make the women wear them. the one that covers the whole face is called a bourka isn't it? and the headscarf is called a hijab. i think there is another name for it but i can't remember. my mom had a lot of muslim women friends when we were growing up and they don't wear them when they are at home or when there are only women or family around.

there was a time in western society when it was considered very improper to walk around in public without your head covered and women who were married were supposed to wear some kind of head covering, but nowadays we have no traditions.

I think thats kinda demented. Especially the husbands making their wives. Its like the wives are under the power of their husbands. And it is called a hijab.

I think its stupid to cover yourself so other men wont see you. I dont understand whats going to happen if they do? The world wont end.

well, it's a good thing no ones making you wear one. i think it sucks that some men force women to wear them but i don't think it's the majority. i knew a couple girls in university who wore them and they wore them by choice. there isn't much you can do to kids nowadays to make them do this stuff anyway so most of them just do it because they choose to and because it is the tradition they were raised in. i think we could use a little more modesty in this world.

anyway, i think in the qur'an it says men and women are both supposed to be covered up.

oh yeah, the other word was jilbab i think. i think it means coat or cloak or something, clothing that's not revealing.

If a woman wants to wear the Burka (yes, it is called that) it is Her Choice.

In the modern world, once you separate the subjugation of women from Islam, the concept of covering up is the same concept that the Menonites and Amish have. They too wear head scarves. They are christian in origin, so this isn't just an Islamic idea. According to the christian bible women should always cover their hair when worshiping (aka in church).

I can see the elegance in the idea that a woman's beauty is only for the man she has chosen as her husband. He is the only person on the planet worthy of seeing her with her hair down. Hair is considered by many ancient cultures to be the source of a woman's sexual energy. It is extremely sexual.

Many women find the whole-body veil to be liberating. They can talk to a man and don't get goggled at.

Would I personally ever wear a veil? Not right now. I like to show off and share my beauty with everyone.

Quran Vs Culture
In my opinion no where in the Quran God says women has to wear hijab. Moreover God also asks men to protect their chastity. Chastity is as much important for men as it is for women. Let's see the following verses:

"Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely God is Aware of what they do." [Quran 24:30]

People keep on talking about women's chastity but God wants men also to protect their purity. Chastity is not a feminine thing. It's a valuable thing for both men and women.

The next verse talks about women:

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigor, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto God together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed." [Quran 24:31]

Here God is asking women to cover their chest (breast) but He doesn't say women have to cover their face or head. The hijab is a cultural dress of the Arabs and it's NOT prescribed anywhere in the Quran.

In general, men and women both are asked to guard their modesty and refrain from showing arrogance.

Why is that relevant? Are people over here going to respect me if I say I am a Christian or are they going to hate me if I say I am a Jew/Muslim.

As long as I don't twist the Bible/Quran/Torah, what's the problem?
