I am writing for an 88 year old gentleman who is experiencing excruciating pain in the lower back and the left leg. He has had three episodes over the last three years, the first time very shortly after starting on Zocor (Simvastatin). The first time, he was in pain for about a year and then had a good year after that. The pain then returned for about six months, followed by approximately ten pain-free months, during which time he walked two miles per day. The pain has again returned and is more severe than the first two episodes. He has tingling in the toes but is not sure if it predates the pain. PSA is negative and diabetes has been ruled out. He has been prescribed two Tylenol Arthritis and told to see how it goes. I am not family but I would like to give him some questions for his doctor and/or the names of tests he can/should insist on.
