Q: Re Appointment - Starting IVF cycle this month

I had my RE appointment yesterday and we are starting our IVF cycle this month!! Yay!! I'm so freaking excited! Although when we paid for everything my DH said this baby better be a NBA player because it's costing us so much.

Anyway...I start my ovulation suppressant drugs this Saturday. Its a nose spray. Then once I start AF (around Nov 17th), I will start the injections. Once in the morning and once at night. I had to do my first practice injection yesterday with the nurse. I really really can't say how much I sympathize with Diabetics having to give themselves a shot every day. I'm such a wimp....but I did it, and it will be worth it in the end.
I'm getting fertility acupuncture twice a week now...they say it increases the chances of implantation by quite a bit...plus I'm addicted to the relaxation it provides.
So this is it! Wow....I'm kinda numb. I'm so grateful that they have this technology. Think if we lived 50 years ago with this problem....there was nothing you could do. They've come such a long way, and it's only getting better.
I will keep you all posted if you like
Take care
Cheryl

Wow, that seems kinda...fast. I always thought it took months to go through an IVF cycle.

How are you feeling about everything?

I'm glad they are able to help. How are the success rates at the clinic? Do you happen to know the multiple rates they have there?

NBA player! That's classic.

Yes...it seems fast to me too...but that's alright with me! I think it's because I was at exactly the right time in my cycle and had all my testing done previously...so there was really nothing holding me back. I almost had to wait until Jan to start the cycle, but they did an ultrasound yesterday and they saw 9 follicles on my right ovary, and 5 on my left...so they don't have to wait for more follicles to develop.

I'm feeling very excited. All along I knew it would come to this (deep down inside). They kept telling me nothing was wrong, when really my hormones were nowhere near normal. All it takes is finding the right Dr that will listen to you. And I found a Doctor that took me seriously...FINALLY! It only took a little over 2 years to find her!
The success rates at my clinic are really good, I think because they are a private clinic (rather than Gov't funded) they can go outside the normal practices. For example, most clinics do a "Day 3 transfer". Meaning, they will put the embryos back into your uterus 3 days after they have fertilized. My clinic can wait until day 5 to do the transfer...that way they can monitor all the embryos that are doing well, and if they make it to day 5, they have a 60% success rate with 1 embryo. They really try to only transfer 1 egg to avoid multiples because it is hard on the mother and the babies. But if you wanted more than one embryo, they will put more in for you.
If I do a day 3 transfer, their success rates are 42%...which I think is pretty good as well. Better than the 5% chance that I have each month now.

The best case scenario would be that all my follicles develop at the standard rate and that I have at least 8 fertilized embryos at day 3. Then they will freeze like 5 embryos, and let 3 develop to day 5, and then implant me with the best one, and freeze the other two. This way if it doesn't work the first time, they will thaw all the rest and take the best one and do it again. I pray it doesn't come to this, but that is as far as we will go. We will see!

Good luck! All those treatments and trying must be really tough... I hope it works like a charm! You deserve it after going through so much and having such a hard time finding a doctor to help you.

Those success rates sound pretty good. Especially if it can reduce the chance of multiples. No one wats a high risk pregnancy if they don't have to have one.

Honestly, I've never heard of a 5 day transfer (not that I've researched it) But it makes sence to me!

Stupid question: If they put an egg in at day 5, does that make you 5dpo, technically? Or is that the day you would start counting from?

I'm glad you are excited about it. It is a huge step. But hopefully, you will only have to do this once and next month you will get to start posting belly pics!!

How is dh handling things? Aside from the financial aspect.

It's hard to explain the day 5 transfer the way the RE explained it to me. Basically, the longer they wait, the better they can assess the quality of the embryo. Those that are still splitting cells on day 5 are more likely to continue to grow...make sense?

I think they count the dpo based on the day they transfer the embryo. I think implantation might be quicker, because it doesn't have to travel down the fallopian tubes (which normally may take up to 6 days or so).

DH is quite excited. He has been a rock through out the process. When we first started to TTC over 2 years ago, he was so excited every month...and of course got disappointed each month too. So he stopped getting excited after about 6 months of ttc. Now its nice to see him get excited again. I became numb too. I tried not to get excited each month....but now I'm fit to be tied. A lot of positive energy...just need to maintain it!

I don't have time to read the whole quote, but good luck! Let me know how the shots go. I'll probably need to learn that, too.
