Thanks for that insight, Georgia.

What about people that call themselves Catholic but disagree with almost everything the church stands for, on issues like premarital sex, abortion, contraception, stem cell research, homophobia, etc.?

Being catholic, in its pure form, isn't about all those things. It's about god, and love.

In fact, the nuns at my school regularly march in gay parch marches. Because catholicism SHOULD BE about tolerance.

Georgia I'd love to see you discuss this good idea with a person on another board who believes the exact opposite. I rather like your ideal of catholicism.

I agree with Jincks about your views, too, Georgia. They are very refreshing.

Being Catholic means being faithful to Christ, which means being faithful to the Churches teachings, since the Church speaks for Christ in matters of faith and morals.

Simple as that.

Maybe that's what you think, Guest. Jesus didn't say anything about following the Catholic church. He followed the Jewish Temple, as I recall.

It's depressing, isn't it? I'm not catholic. But I am very close to some very open-minded catholics, and I go to a very open-minded catholic school.

I see what you're saying guest, but if the church starts saying "kill all gay people" and your gut says "god doesn't want you to kill all gay people" who would you listen to?

"Maybe that's what you think, Guest. Jesus didn't say anything about following the Catholic church. He followed the Jewish Temple, as I recall."

your knowledge of Christ and his teachings, is shocking.

Truth is Christ proclaimed that the "tennants of the vinyard" when the son came and was killed would have their possition taken from them and it would be given to other faithful servents. Issiah Professed that in the days of our lord, the Robe, sash and key of religious authority in the kingdom of david would be revoked and given to a father figure (pope is from the word Papa, which is Italian for Father) who would reign over the whole house.

Jesus said to peter, I give you the keys to the kingdom.

He said to his Church, the Apostles, whoever listens to you listens to me.

These are just a few examples of where your knowledge fails you in this regard.

"I see what you're saying guest, but if the church starts saying "kill all gay people" and your gut says "god doesn't want you to kill all gay people" who would you listen to? "

First off the Church could not say that, it would go against many unchangable doctrines. If the church decares something as a requirment that I dont like or feel is wrong, I have to listen to Christ, that is his Earthly authority that speaks for him.

Your knowledge of Christ and his teachings, guest, is biased.

But that's the point guest... a lot of people feel that the church's teachings on issues like homosexuality, women in the church, etc. are wrong and against Christ's teachings. That doesn't make them not catholic, it just means they are choosing their gut feeling, what they really believe Christ teaches, over the teachings of the church.

See what I mean?
