Correction: it's GESTATIONAL diabetes and it isn't caused by eating sweets. I work in Nutrition and we treat lots of women with this very common symptom of pregnancy. Also to not send out wrong information, the baby does NOT grow bigger BECAUSE of the insulin shots, the baby is bigger because of the mother having a high glucose level (gestational diabetes) and can cause complications with the baby besides just weight.
It's not "sweets" that cause diabetes either, just so everyone knows. An unhealthy diet mixed with an inactive lifestyle family history is what causes diabetes.
Anyway, I'd have to agree that drinking lots of fluids (suggest carrying a nalgene bottle around and refilling often) is the best way to stay hydrated, and thus having regular bowel movements. Granted, you will be in the restroom more often so be sure to drink more during the day and less at night. Eating higher-fiber foods is also a good thing, but try to recognize soluble fiber choices like oats, legumes, barley, whole wheat, etc. because soluble fiber forms a gel (do an experiment with metamucil: mix with water and let it stand overnight... you'll see it form a gel). The gel will then be excreted much easier than if you're eating just fiber that will absorb water and make you constipated... especially if you're not drinking enough fluids. You don't necessarily need to drink WATER, but really anything liquid qualifies as fluids.
Please let me know if you need more info. I know this post is late, but if there's others out there reading it like I was today, then I hopefully could be of help.
Best of luck to all of you!
