General Q and A Answer A3416
A hyperactive thyroid gland can cause paroxysmal supra ventricular tachycardia (PSVT) attacks that manifest like palpitations. One of medications used for treating PSVT is atenolol. Hyperactive thyroid glands can also cause anxiety. In your case, it seems that anxiety increases the fear of palpitations. Anxiety can also cause tachycardia by itself. Anxiety could be the reason why you are experiencing palpitations even when your thyroid hormones’ level is normal. Surgical removal of the thyroid gland or part of it could solve the problem.
