Discrepancy Between Pap And Colposcopy Biopsy Posted: 10-31-07 11:49am
About 3 months ago when I had a pap smear
come back HGSIL 1 - 111 - severe
dysplasia. This was my first abnormal pap.
I had a colpo around Aug 10th and the
biopsy came back completely clear - which
is strange. My dr said I just needed to
come back in 3 months and have another
colpo due to this discrepancy. In the
meantime I got married and was away on
honeymoon etc. I scheduled a second
opinion, but due to my schedule and
ability to get an appt with the new dr, I
just got in to see her this week. She
seemed to be under the impression that
this was a very serious situation, and
that my pap showed "almost" cancer and she
implied that something more should have
been done. Now I am waiting on results
from her pap. And I am terrified again.
Have I and my original dr compromised my
health? Could it have turned into cancer
now? I want to have a baby next year.
Anyone else experienced these sort of
discrepancies??

Pap smears ARE NOT diagnostic. Pap smears
only suggest whether or not a colposcopy
should be done. Many times a pap smear
will come back HGSIL and when the actual
colpo/biopsy is done, there is nothing
there.
'Almost' cancer is not actual cancer. High
grade dysplasia is 'Almost' cancer. How
long will it take to turn into cancer? A
very long time. Not in the few months
since you had your biopsy.
It sounds like this doctor is being
thorough. But it also doesn't sound like
there is anything to get overly worried
about.
Remember, pap smears WILL NOT diagnose
anything at all. Pap smears are only meant
to see if you need further testing (a
colposcopy and a biopsy). The only
diagnostic test is a biopsy. Which you've
had and it was clear.
