Long Term Affects of Medical Abortion? Posted: 10-30-07 16:27pm
I had a medical abortion 6 years ago, when
I was 19, still in college, and totally
unprepared to become a mother. At the
time, I had been with my boyfriend for
only about 6 months, and thankfully he was
very supportive during the whole
experience. Little did I know he would
later become my husband! As far as I
know, my experience went fairly smoothly
and other than the typical bleeding, awful
cramping, vomiting, etc....we made it
through. I still have many lingering
regrets and emotions from time to time ...
but my husband and I look forward to
starting a family some day in the coming
years.
My question is about the potential long
term affects of an abortion? Back when I
went through all of this, I wasn't
thinking about starting a family or ever
wanting to be pregnant again. For the
last 2 years or so I have had severe pain
in my lower right side, right over my
ovaries. I have had UltraSounds (all came
back normal), a CT Scan of my abdomen
(also normal) and next week I am having a
Colonoscopy to see if this is related to
my colon/intestine at all (I do have bowel
issues as well, so I am ruling out a few
other possibilities like Crohn's).
However...I have never mentioned my
abortion to any of my doctors. Not my
Gyno, my main doctor, or the GI Specialist
I was recently referred to. I am just
wondering if there is anything abortion
related I could be missing....and if women
who have had medical abortions were
successfully able to become pregnant later
in life? I was 1 month along when I had
mine.

I work in an abortion clinic, and have had
3 abortions myself..
I am definitely still able to become
pregnant, and abortion itself does not
affect your fertility =)
AN abortion itself really does not have
lasting effects such as you describe.
I DO have crohns disease, and also have
cysts on my ovaries, the pain feels VERY
similar.

Thanks for the response - that makes me
feel a lot better! Crohn's Disease is
something they are "ruling out" next week
with the Colonoscopy...it is just tough
with ongoing pain in that area to be sure
what it is coming from. Endometriosis is
another thought. Better safe than sorry,
I guess, to check all of the options.
Are you able to control some of your
pelvic pain (or do you have pelvic pain
from your Crohn's?) from diet and whatnot?

Not from diet no.. I eat VERY healthfully,
I am a health freak. 5'6 124 pounds...
I use medications to control pain and
flare ups, I only have pain 2-3 times a
year now, which I control with meds as
needed.
