DVT in right popliteal vein + Factor V Leiden Posted: 10-29-07 18:33pm
My husband had cancer 10 years ago and
after surgery, developed a blood clot in
his lung. He survived and through that
clot the doctor tested him positive for
Factor V Leiden gene mutation. Now 10
years later, he has developed a DVT in his
right popliteal vein. It was discovered
because he had complained to his doctor of
knee pain and swelling. The doc thought
he was suffering a gout attack (which he
also has) and sent him to an orthopedic
surgeon to see what he could do for him.
The ortho Dr was going to do a flush of
his knee in hopes of "cleaning out" the
knee of gout crystals thus relieving the
recurring gout attacks to the knee. Part
of the pre op for the surgery included a
ultrasound of the knee. It was then they
discovered the DVT.
Needless to say, the knee surgery is now
not going to happen and my husband is on
leave because he cannot perform his normal
duties of his job. The doctors seem to
just be passing him around and no one
knows what to do because of the factor V.
They cannot seem to tell us how large the
blockage is and what he should be doing to
relieve the pain other than take pain
pills like they are candy.
I want to know if there is anyone who is
suffering this same problem. I don't know
what to tell my husband when he ask's me
why his knee hurts so bad.
