Hi Everyone - I am new to the forum. I would like to talk to some people who has experienced high blood pressure while pregnant/or before becoming pregnant. I developed chronic hypertension about 2 yrs ago, it runs in the family. My doctor changed my medicine to Aldomet and Norvasc 10 mg daily because we weren't using any form of birth control. My doc says these meds are safe to use while pregnant. Alot of people say the have used the Aldomet, but does anyone know about/or taken the Norvasc? It's a calcuim channel blocker. That's my concern, and to make sure that nothing was wrong with the baby while taking it. Were you on medicine the whole 9 months? I would love to talk. Please reply!

There is a general rule that taking medicine should be avoid through pregnancy, especially in first trimester when baby organs are forming and are most vulnerable.
Also, benefits of taking the medicine must be greater, than the possible potential risk for the baby.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies for Norvasc in pregnant women and it's recommended to discontinue nursing while NORVASC is administered.
What are the highest blood pressure rates you had?

When I first found out I had chronic hypertension 2 years ago I was hospitalized for a few days with a reading of 200/140.

Did you doctor give you an explanation for your hypertension?
What kind of tests and examination have been performed for your problem?
Can you ask your doctor to replace Norvasc with other drug that has been clinically proven to be safe in pregnant women?

Yes, I was prescribed Methyldopa also knows as Aldomet. I had awful side effects and quit taking it. My blood pressure was 150 over 100 when I was prescribed it. I only took it for 3 weeks, my body just couldn't take it. I am at a loss of what to do now. I know high blood pressure can hurt my baby but I don't want to be in pain all the time.
