Q: Snapping sounds when I bite - is it TMJ ?

Bear with me here people, my English isn't the best.

Lately in mornings my jaw has been hurting so I'll take an Ibuprofen and go to work. When I eat my girlfriend comments she hears snapping sounds when I bite down. It isn't all that bad but maybe it's TMJ?

I have a dentist appointment this week and I'll ask him I thought I might as well get an opinion from here.

There is a possibility. Im not gonna diagnose you though even though i think that there is a fair chance that it is. Use heat and ice on it too. if you need help finding a doctor to help you with this let me know.

It could be TMJ, but watch out. I had clicking sounds in my jaw every once in awhile and all of a sudden one night I yawned and heard a loud crack and had dislocated my jaw and couldn't close it. It wasn't painful, but had to go to the hospital with my mouth gaping open (and trying not to drool). After 4 hours and about 5 doctors, an IV with demerol, and finally knocking me out in order to get it back into place. It was really really stuck. I went to the dentist a week later and he gave me a mouth piece (called an NTI) that I have to sleep with every night because I clench my teeth when I sleep and that causes pressure and stress on the joint. My dentist also told me now that I've dislocated it once, it can easily happen again, I have to be very careful in what I do. Not only that, but I was the joke of my family for quite some time.

yes do be careful but remember what hapens to one person may not necessarily happen to another. if you just leave your jaw when its stuck most of the time it will unstick itself. Mine was for 2 years and no one could get it undone.

Ok thanks. I haven't dislocated it I'm sure I would have known that. I'll try the heat and ice for a while and see what my new dentist has to say. It's not that big of a deal just wanted to educate myself before jumping to conclusions. Thanks again.

P.S.: Please read my post in the Mental Disorders forum, I need more help with that.

Thanks. I'm relaxed about this, I'll do what been directed here for a while and see how that goes. I'm more worried over my speech.
