Q: Why Isn't Lortab Sometimes Used to Help Depression?

I know this is not a politically correct question, but I was prescribed lortab after a surgery. I had some left over. One day, when I was out of my anti depressant, Lexapro, I took a Lortab. I realized it instantly helped to elevate my mood. I realize Lortab is addictive, but so are many often prescribed anti-depressants and sleep aids. Why is it not used in this way? Or why aren't there at least some antideprssants that work in a similar way?

Extremely eHealthy
Pain
Lortab is usually perscribed strickly for pain. That is why they gave it to you after your surgery.
The reason why it worked so well as a sleep aid is because it knocks you out and you can't have anxiety when you are knocked out and sleeping that well. Nope, that is only used as pain relief and yes, very addicting it is.
Medications for anxiety have the right componients in them to block the brain from having attacks or bad ones at least.

Hope this helps,
Carrie

The reason it isn't prescribed is because it has such a potential for addiction. They used to prescribe it as an antidepressant and antianxiety (not hydrocodone i dont even think they made hydrocodone at the time) but opioids non-the-less. but of course they realized the addiction potential and stopped prescribing for said reasons. I really wish they still did prescribe them for those reasons though because I agree 100% it knocks out anxiety and depression. =[

I agree
I have been taking lortab for 1 year now. I am now on my 7th. A/D. as well as Zanex...! Last time I looked they have high rates of addiction also. I have noticed that the lortabs make me feel as I wish the A/Ds did. But instead the A/Ds make me sleepy and give me no energy at all. I have talked to my doctor and asked to be put on the Lortabs for depression but he states that he can not perscribe them for that due to the legal issues it causes him. They (docs) get reported for perscribing them to patients for long periods that costs them 1000s of dollars to fight. I am just at my wits end fighting to try to get on a medicine that I am comfortable with as well as understanding all the risks. I feel as tho each person responds to medicine differently so what works for one may not work for me but since I may be the minority I am treated like the majority.

With all the advancements in the field of pharmacology I would think an antidepressant could be made that has some of the properties of the lortab. I agree that for me the lortabs make me feel like I wish the antidepressant did but it is also very short acting.
