Q: Contraceptive Pill

My girlfriend has been thinking about going on the contraceptive pill for 2 months now, we went to our free sexual health clinic and they've given us a 3 months supply of the pill.

We haven't been told exactly when she should start taking the pill, but we're pretty sure it's at the start of a menstrual cycle. Is this right?

We're thinking about the contraceptive pill as we're really unlucky with condoms and they always seem to break. The past 2 months my girlfriend has had to take the morning after pill around 2 or 3 days before her period because of this.

Last time she got the morning after pill it 'messed up' her period, she was late on, and on some days there was no bleeding at all. We know it's going to happen again this time and were wondering if she should start taking the morning after pill when her period starts, or wait until next month when everything is 'back to normal'.

Also, are bad stomach cramps a normal side effect of the morning after pill?

thanks.
Chris.

She does not have to start the pills during her period. Problem fixed! What you should do right now is test for pregnancy just to be safe, and then have her start the first active pill on a Sunday, just to make it easier to remember. Using this method, she will have to use back-up protection for one week, but after that week she will be completely protected.

Once she is on the pill there will be no use for a morning after pill or condoms unless she misses two pills and you have unprotected sex.

I'm glad to hear you're being safe!

If I may ask, how are you breaking condoms?
