Has anyone seen the trailer for "Raw For 30 Days"? It's a documentary about six people, with diabetes as they attempt to reverse their diabetes through eating only raw food.

The trailer on Youtube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSuqCMld00w

What does everyone think of this idea? Is it someone anyone here has tried before? I'm just getting into this whole raw food thing and I'd love to get some advice. Most people in my family eventually develop diabetes and I’d like to prevent myself of doing the same. Does eating an all raw diet work?

The homepage for this film is:

I'm a little skeptical. It's hard to believe that you could reverse years of damage with only 30 days of raw food.

You can lose weight and stop the progression of diabetes. Even losing a few pounds can help your blood sugar levels. Eating better is never bad for you!

Sure, eating healthy will help. But do you really think it can cure or reverse diabetes?

I'm pretty skeptical about raw food, the only difference between raw food and cooked rood is that it has a small part more nutrients... maybe you mean food thats straight from the vine... very healthy to eat that stuff lol I that you have to drastically change your diet if you and going to reverse diabetes in 30 days, maybe I'm wrong.

You have to be careful with raw food. Make sure it is well washed. I assume you mean just vegetables and fruit? All meats should be well cooked. Heat will destroy bacteria that may make you sick. Eating healthy is highly recommended for diabetics along with exercise. There is no cure for diabetes, yet. But you can keep it under good control. Test often. A healthy lifestyle is still the best prevention for Type 2. What type does your family have?

raw food
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and has been eating a raw live food diet for a year now. She has normal blood sugars. She eats lots of delicious foods. I check her urine pH multiple times a day to keep her body balanced. When I learned about raw foods I also learned of the importance of the acid/alkaline pH balance. The body's pH is a delicate balance that needs to be maintained through proper hydration and nutrition. My daughter is truely a pH miracle. If a 7 - now 8 year old can eat all healthy foods anyone can!!! I believe we don't have to do diabetes.

alkavorian
Are you a type 1 diabetic? Tell me about yourself. I looked at your profile and there was not much information, but I noticed your birthday is 2 days after mine. My daughter eats an alkavorian diet. I make a shake everyday made of avocado and cucumber (alkalinizing) and a pudding made of avocado, fresh almond milk, lime, and stevia. She eats salads with all raw ingredients including dressing. Many different types of soups including bean soup, sprouts, nuts, nut butters, oils, quinoa, fish occasionally, and much more. When you learn to prepare raw foods it is truely amazing the list of ingredients you use. Yesterday, I prepared soups and used a new ingredient in one, celery root. This particular soup you cut up veggies, rub them with grapeseed oil and broil them for a few minutes. The soup had several veggies in it my daughter would not have touched 6 months ago. Often, it is is the way you prepare it and the seasonings.

Please contact me and let me know your experience and how she deals with it, she's still very young I'm happy to hear that she's gone raw so easily!

How to start?
Hello daisycolors, I'm type 2 and want to start the raw food diet. I have read a lot of books about the subject, recipes etc but still not sure how to start.
Is it better to stop the insulin altogether in one hit or scale it down?
If I stop it and then have a hypo what are the best foods to eat as I am supposed to eat carbohydrates to bring the sugar level back up? Currently I have also been told to carry glucose tablets. Should that continue?
What length of time is acceptable to stay at high sugar levels before reintroducing insulin?
just some questions one of you may be able to give me some advice.
thanks a lot!

I am a raw foodist for 2 years now. It is true. Watch the movie "Simply Raw" and you will know. You can cure diabetes yourself.

i also have been alkavorian for seven weeks. i was type 1 on insulin only for 3 years. my insulin needs reduced quite dramatically over the first 3 weeks, before it stabilised.

im convinced it has been down to the diet, and i'm sticking with it for a long long time.

best wishes to all

The Raw way of life is good if you can stick to it. I did try this about a year ago and did not make it 100%. I still like my hot soup creations in the winter time. So now I am 60/40 raw. Plus I still have the green smoothies daily. All those intense vitamins and minerals. Smile
I eat a vegan whole food plant based diet. That has been proven in fact to reverse diabetes. Check out the book by Neal Barnard "Reversing diabetes." It's simple really, get rid of meat, dairy and heavily processed foods. Exercise daily. At least 30 minutes minimum at a time, preferably 45 mins to 1 hour or more.

have a read of the book 'the pH miracle diet for diabetes' by Dr Robert O. Young.

he is a micro-biologist who has been studying the effects of foods on the human body for over 2o years.

i stick to the principles of the alkaline diet and i am still seeing remarkable results after 3.5 months

my doctor is amazed!

I just watched the dvd reversing diabetes. I have type 1 diabetes and thought as course you will require less insulin or next to none, if your only eating raw veggies and a few nuts. I don't think its a cure. I like to see how long these people stick to this diet.I believe you need a balance of fruit veggies and low GI carb's in your diet and exercise. If you told every person with diabetes you could only ever eat a vegan raw diet for the rest of your life, and thats the cure, people would not stick to it and there BSL would be all over the place, and thats worse for you in the long term.I would hate to think I could't ever enjoy a glass of wine again in my life, or have a salad sandwich ever again, or a nice pasta because it contains carb's.So if the cure for diabetes is to only eat raw foods the rest of my life I'll put up with the insulin needles any day to be able to enjoy my blanced diet thst includes good low GI carbs.

ive been eating the alkaline diet since july 1st 2009.

at first its true that the diet dictated very few carbs and lots of fresh veggies and green smoothies. fruit was not allowed.

after 5 weeks i no longer needed basal insulin of mealtime insulin.
at 2 months i was able to start to bring some low alkaline grains into the menu and watched as my blood sugar levels dropped all by themselves.

after 4 and half months eating this way i now eat moderate carbs each day and occasionally enjoy a meal out with friends.

you can have your treats and eat a healthy diet. but this is not a short term fix, i am in this for good as i enjoy superb normal non-diabetic blood sugars and HbA1c results.

it is my belief that diabetes (for me) has been a symptom of an over acidic body.

now i am not acidic and i do not have diabetic symptoms.

hi atomic,
heres a rough daily menu guide for me.

morning
supplements taken with a pint of filtered water and a scoop of supergreens powder.
breakfast - a plate of mixed veggies/salad either raw or steamed (usually a mix of both)with some tofu or scrambled eggs, sprinkled with mixed seeds and a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice.

lunch - apple and banana and mixed seed bar if i am working, or a mixed salad/veggies with hummus, or home-made veggie soup with dehydrated veg crackers and some hummus or nut 'cheese'

dinner - big plate of steamed veggies with soya beans and salad. dressing made from olive oil and lemon juice flavoured with my favourite spices or herbs. and of course sprinkles of mixed seeds.

pudding - home made fresh banana icecream, amde from frozen banana blitzed in the food processor, sometimes i like to add frozen strawberries too. then sprinkle some raw cacao nibs on top. yummy!

so there you have it. i eat plenty of variety. and dont go hungry, although it did take some getting used too at first.

if i fancy some more carbs then i eat boiled brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, or buckwheat.
raw buckwheat is quite nice eaten just soaked for a few hours then allowed to sprout.
also some boiled new potatoes (usually only about 3 or 4 of those though)

my staples food list
lemons
tomatoes
broccoli
cauliflower
spinach
bell peppers
cucumber
olive oil
sweet potatoe (eaten raw)
courgette/zucchini
bananas
apples
strawberries
coconut
stevia (natural sugar substitute)
almonds
sunflower seeds
pumpkin seeds
cacao nibs (raw cocoa)
tofu
soya beans
chickpeas

i'm sure there is much more but off the top of my head .....lol

best wishes
Sharon

Atomic1, like I mentioned above, eating a vegan plant based diet is the cure for diabetes. I'm not talking 100% raw when i say plant based foods. Grains are plants. Vegetables are plants, fruit comes from a plant. You can eat everything that is not animal derived. You just avoid meat, dairy, eggs and heavily processed food. You can still have your pasta and potatoes and rice plus all the vegetables there is plus all the fruit there is. I don't see any deprivation there.
If someone truly wants to reverse their diseases from eating the western diet, also known as the standard american diet(SAD), they have to dump the SAD, embrace a plant based diet, lifestyle really since this is not a "diet" that you go off of once you are cured.. and get out and exercise. At least a 30 minute walk daily to start. If one cannot get out and exercise right away, at least change the diet over to the plant based one. If you search for McDougall, you will come across a lot of info from that. Good luck.
