Q: Toxic Chemicals From Carpets
asked by: healthnuts on October 25th, 2007

I've only recently learned that commercially made carpets emit various toxic chemicals.

My questions are:

1. Do all commercially made carpets emit toxic chemicals?
2. Can clothes and blankets also contain these chemicals? And if yes is there any way to test them?

Not sure. But 100 percent pure organic cotton or wool might be the way to go for blankets and towels and bedding. More expensive but definitely worth it.

I have litterally pulled up all caret in our home..Since the carpet has been gone I have felt some better..There are places I can walk into and without looking can tell there are fumes wihtin the building..Carpet emits a stong odor as does alot of new kitchen cabinetry and book shelvesas alot of it are fused with formaldhyde another toxic gas..whenever youa re out shopping look at the labels of the new materials going into products-I ahve been amazed and then people are getting sicker and doctors are not sure why..I say look at what goes into products we wear and sit upon dai;y..

Which toxins and chemicals, exactly?

Carpets themselves are usually either made of woven or tufted material, tied and glued to a backing. Almost all carpet fabric is petroleum based, except wool. Synthetic carpets contain foam, foam rubber, latex or plastic . But the worst part is the organic compounds found in the adhesives: benzene and toluene that contain VOC.
