WOW!!! I am the most excited person today! I only posted one time on this board, but I actually got the solution I needed.

I have been suffering with TMJ for 17 years (I'm only 32). I have also spent THOUSANDS of dollars on solutions (TMJ specialists, physical therapy, dentists, accupuncture, etc). I have no real pain or headaches, but my jaw locks every morning and I have to pull it open.

Someone suggested Neuromuscular Dentistry - so I gave it a shot. I found a doc online and went it right away. I finally got my new oral appliance and the first two days did very little. I have to admit the fatigue did lessen, but the popping and locking was still there.

I could tell that my bit was changing (first time EVER). But again - the lock and pop were still there.

I woke up this morning...AND MY JAW DID NOT POP OR LOCK...it just opened! I woke up my DH, made him turn on the light and I opened and closed my mouth about 10 times!

I am amazed...just amazed!

Thank you sooooo much!

Hi Dyanmatteson....I couldn't remember your name! But THANK YOU SO MUCH...I'm still really amazed.

I have to say - after the first two days...I was very disappointed and felt like I had just flushed $5500 down the toilet...but that's not the case.

I am so happy you told me about this...nobody has ever told me there was such a thing as "Neuromuscular Denistry"...nobody.

Wow - please if you are reading this and you have TMJ...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give it a shot! I am proof it really does work!

Im proof it works for that matter as well.

You are more than welcome. im just happy that i could help you. it does take a while to get used to it and feel improvement but that is just because your muscles are fighting and they will quit after a while.

ok cindy ---- didnt i explain this on your side as you asked me to? lol

nmd aligns the bite and the muscles in their proper functional position. the teeth and muscles must work in harmony. you get hooked up to a tens machine and this delivers a small electric shock to the muscles giving them a deep massage. this causes the muscles to relax. the dr. records this and makes an orthotic that will retrain your muscles to their proper functional position. it takes roughly 3 months depending on the person for the muscles to retrain. that is phase I--phase II is to have orthodontics --sometimes not ---to get the teeth to hold that position.

would Nueuromuscular dentistry work for someone with a degenerative disc as well...What if someone has very little cartilage left and had a dislocated disc ? From what i have read they seem like the best doctors for this...Are neuromuscular dentists types of chiropractors themselves?

yes they can help with degererative disc--ther are not chiropractors and only work in the mouth.

do these dentists ever recommend surgery or do they always use the more conservative approach? If they aren't trained as chiropractors as well it would be weird if they reposition the mouth which has nothing to do with the joint unless it is recaptured...Don't they have to physically manipulate the joint with the mouth thats the only way i could see them working for me as someone with a partially degenerative disc?

they do it slowly with an orthotic. you will see when you have a consult. nmd is 99.9% successful. I went further into surgery recommended by a nmd/oral surgeon because i was a rare case--and my jaw was too big for my head. chiropractors adjust bones--nmd is working with the muscles.the teeth and their position effect the position of the jaw bone. by manipulating the muscles you also manipulate the joint as well. im sure that when you have your consult it will be more clear to you.--it is easier to see and understand. i had to have my doctor explain it to me with a model the first time around.Smile

i have read that it isn't always successful but i'm only guessing it is extremely successful if you have a good doctor...

One thing i don't get is say one had a non-reversible thing like braces or degenerative disc...

If degenerative disc is non-reversable how can neuromuscular dentistry reverse it..
Or another treatment like surgery being non-reversable could neuromuscular dentistry save that individual as well?

And then nueromuscular dentistry uses non-reversable techniques as well like 24 hour splints or shaving of teeth i have read...This is very confusing i just hope that
99.9% is true and if it is then everyone on this site is saved too i guess...

I'm guessing they can test your pain level with all the fancy devices they got...

B/c i need this pain gone and i plan on seeing that nmd asap..

i am one of the non successful cases. 99.9% means that most people that go to a nmd have success--this is a statistic because a lot of people out there dont even know nmd exists. it does work--by the way im the .1% you have to be careful because there are alot of dr.s out there that make themselves look good and really arent.

and by the way what you have read is from those that probably didnt do what the doctor said to.
