Q: Checking For Dilation/effacement

Just wondering when did your doctor (or when do most doctors) start checking you to see if your dilated or effaced?

Just curious since I have an appt tomorrow morning and I'll be 35 weeks. I'm not sure if she'll do it tomorrow or wait at least another week.

She might! Some doctors wait until 36 weeks, others don't check you at all.

my Drs start checking at 36 weeks but i got checked at 35 because of a lot of cramping and i had started dilating already. but then at the 36 week appt i hadn't changed at all. then i didn't have her until 2 days before my due date!

My doc started checking me at 34 weeks. I was induced at 36.
At 34 weeks, I was 1cm...and nothing changed until I was induced and got an epidural.
Man those epidurals sure speed things up!

Ask your doctor at your appointment.

Some doctors don't check at all because dilating/effacement prior to labor can be completely meaningless. Other doctors check every week.

My doctor checked at 34 weeks, I think. I was nearly 2 cm dilated. He said I'd go early. I was overdue. Sad

my doctor doesn't check at all until you're at the hospital in labor. i did ask her to check when i was there for my gbs test though, since i was already half naked on the table.

it really doesn't matter though, you could have no progress and give birth a few days later, or you could be 2cm and give birth 4 weeks later. it's frustrating either way because if you're not dilated you'll be upset that nothing's happening, and if you are you'll be waiting and waiting thinking it could be any day.

B's right! I was only 1cm dialated and went into labor just days later. When I know of people who stay 2cm for WEEEEKS!!

All Dr's are different!
