The best thing that works for potty training is a crate.
Puppy pads....
Positive reinforcement.

yeah i agree with the positive reinforcement i do have the crate but i wanted to give him some room to run so he is camping in my bathroom with a baby gate. i just got puppy pads and am using shaping to get him to use them(sorry i took behavioral management--shaping is reinforcing closer approximations to the target(end) behavior)

what about biting?

get hims lots of teething toys
they will help
teach him that those are HIS so he will feel like hes got his own toys to play with
also a chew bone or rawhide will help keep him busy

use puppy pds for the potty training
and also if he has a spot where he goes the smae time over and over then sprinkle eper on the floor so when he goes to sniff he will get the pepper in his nose and he will never do it again

Very Happy

i never crated any of my dogs or rescues
ive been dog training for a very very long time now so if you need any help then feel free to pm or email me anytime!

What I did with my rotteweiler was whenever she "love" bit me, I would hold her snout closed...
I worked at the SPCA, and their advice for biters was to pinch their ears... that's supposedly what the mommies do when the pups are doing something unacceptable.

With the bathroom idea, I don't think it's a good idea. Room to run=room to pee
With the crate, they are supposed to be small enough only for them to stand, and lay down. That way, they won't pee where they sleep.

biting

you need to start a thing called noise adversion
whenever she bites you then take 2 metal pot or pan lids and slam them together
when you do this DONT look her in the eyes
she will learn that when she bites it makes an unplesant noise
work with her for about a week on this

you know i forgot you had the shelter--silly me

he does have a lot of toys--my feet just seem to satiate him more lol

hes only 8 weeks old so i guess patience is key. my problem is that im scared to death someone will try to take him away from me. im waiting on my dr.s permission so i can have him in my apartment. i have him there any way but im a little nervous. the doctor garunteed me she would give me the note. so i got the puppy---actually we (a married couple and i) went to an auction and the puppy was an auction item. the couple bought the puppy for me.($575) i burst into tears in front of a ton of people.

i think that both your advice will work--HIs crate is big enough to turn around in but it breaks my heart to put him in there and leave him there. I want it to be that he can go in there if he wants and when we go somewhere i dont want him to see it as punishment.

have you guys heard of tapping the nose with a finger when they bite?

8 weeks is the perfect time to start teaching him its not okay to bite

try this: put some tabasco sauce on your ankles
when he bites he gets a horrid taste in his mouth...after the 2nd or 3rd try he wont EVER do it again lol
sound aversion usually works best though
if you have to try the tabasco sauce (the HOTTEST kind possible) then do that and i promise he will stop

tepping the nose will cause him to start biting your fingers instead
he will think you are trying to play with him and anytime someone reaches their hand to him he'll bite it

crates for me are a discipline thing and never a everyday routine
we dont lock our kids in cages when they pee or poop in their diapers so we shouldnt do it with our dogs either. they dont know what they are doing wrong
id be hecka mad if someone put me in a crate

I used the crate for potty training. Now my Roxy loves her crate. She goes in there on her own. It's her own "cave"
I like to put blankets over it is dark in there... she loves it

i agree with the crate idea. in behavior management you learn that you use the least restrictive method first and only if that doesnt work you go on to a more restrictive method. to me the crate is the last resort.

I agree with being mad at someone if they put you in a crate.lol I have a client that wanted a hampster and a cage and i asked him what he was gonna do with it and he said put it in the closet. I asked him if he wanted to be stuck in a cage and shoved in a closet and he said no. so i asked him why he wanted to do that to a hampster--he said" nothing" which is his answer to everything.

oh and i agree with the finger thing too. he tries to just bite my hand after that. i wonder why all puppy training books say to do that. were they born with corn in their heads?
